Everybody has injuries. Sure, some are more impactful than others but the real difference is the drop off with the replacement players. A deep team can overcome injuries. true , but it also is pinpointed to the area the injuries are in , the Cubs have had all kinds of injuries to the starting staff and remained among the best in baseball pretty much most of the season because they had the depth there . The pen was a different story though , but again when you lose the main 2-3 guys it's going to be a huge ask to have others step up.

There were question marks concerning the bullpen before the season even started. From the start of the season till July 1st, the Cubs had 17 blown saves. They have blown 4 games from July on. I'm not laying all the blame on the bullpen because the defense and offense played a role in those losses.

All facets of the team win or lose games. The offense and defense gave them a lead 17 times, and the pen failed to hold up their end. If they could have held 10 of those, this conversation would be dooo different,

Cubs are at 9.4% to make the postseason. Giants and Braves play a 4 games series starting tonight. If the Giants take 3 of 4, that would put the Cubs right there in the loss column with both teams. The Reds play 3 games with the Cards. If the Reds can win 2 of 3, that closes the gap on the Cards. The Mets play 4 with the A's. A split in that series would them in striking distance of the Cubs. The Cubs need to take care of business against the Guardians starting tonight.

If they could have held 10 of those, this conversation would be dooo different, If they converted 5 of those games, the Cubs would hold the 3rd WC spot. The fact that the Cubs played so many 1 run games, an error or the failure to add on runs contributed to these losses.

Cubs are at 9.4% to make the postseason. Well we didnt make it when we had something like a 90% chance at one point last season. Maybe 10% is just what this team needs!

Unless you have a lock down closer there are usually always concerns with a bullpen going into every season since pen arms are often very inconsistent. Not laying all the blame on the pen either , the entire line up pretty much stopped hitting for a couple months. This is a starnge group, they all seem to get hot and cold at the same time.

Since July 3rd Cubs - (Tied) 4th Best Record in Baseball (DBacks - Padres - Astros - A's - Cubs) 22-15 (.595)
+5.5 Braves +5.5 Cardinals +5.0 Pirates +4.5 Nationals +3.0 Reds +2.5 Giants +1.0 Mets
-0.0 Athletics (.600) -0.5 Astros (.611) -2.5 Padres (.676) -4.5 DBacks (.711)
Some people would look at this and think... For the last 37 Games (6 Weeks + ASB)
Not only do the Cubs have a better record than every team we're chasing for the final WC... The Cubs have a better record than:
+6.0 Phillies +5.5 Mariners +4.5 Orioles +4.0 Guardians +3.0 Dodgers +2.5 Brewers +2.5 Yankees
Others would watch it happen and think... We Suck

We Suck This is all fine and dandy but the problem is that the games played through June count just as much as the ones from July onward. Consistency matters. 38 games remain and to get what *could* be a magic number of 88 wins would mean these Cubs need to go 27-11 the rest of the way. So even if they repeated that impressive 22-15 performance you cited since July 3rd the rest of the way? Not good enough, and unfortunately not even close to good enough. But the Cubs can’t even afford to think about the wild card until they can manage to not just get back to .500 but also get above and stay above it. The last time this team was above .500 was May 28th. That’s over 2.5 months ago. For all the good they’ve played since July 3rd? They still remain two games under .500. That is why fans are frustrated and gloomy. Some fans and posters such as yourself are really good at putting an optimistic spin on things but at the end of the day this team has played very poorly this season and that’s an immense shame after coming off the 83-81 performance last season followed by their handing of a record setting managerial contract to Counsell. One step at a time though. If they want fans to buy into them? They need to get back above .500 and stay there first.

I don't know how many games the Cubs lost because of their defense but giving up 63 unearned runs didn't help. Combined with an offense that averages 2.6 runs a game when they lose makes for a bad combination. For a team that has played in so many 1 run games [45], there is no margin for error.

When this thread was created 13 days ago we were 5.0 behind the Braves for a WC spot. Today we are 5.5 back. They are just not making up ground.
