When this thread was created 13 days ago we were 5.0 behind the Braves for a WC spot. Today we are 5.5 back. They are just not making up ground. That's the illusion of being so close, but with so many teams in front. They'd need multiple teams to slump, if not collapse. At least they're playing better baseball but the teams ahead of them know what's at stake as well.

Cubs are 15-14 since the All Star break. I kind of doubt that is striking fear into any of the teams they are chasing for the Wild card.
Remember the "good ole days".....Yesterday....when the Cubs were ahead of the cardinals in the WC race?

Cubs need to go 7-2 over the next 9 so that people can still have false hope otherwise this should thread should be retitled as Cubs .500 chase.

Now it's 6-2 (After literally, just going 7-2) Cubs cutting veterans and bringing up kids, left & right. The team is playing .595 Ball, their last 42. You're missing a good game. Last 42 Games+8.0 Phillies +5.5 Cardinals +5.0 Braves +2.5 Giants +2.5 Brewers +1.5 Mets +1.0 Dodgers -5.5 DBacks -4.0 Padres

Yeah, you can only use July 3rd, where they are 23-17 since Now it's 25-7 With the #1 Pitching Staff in the Majors. After ↓ Jul 3: (.595) 42 Games (and climbing) Jul 31: (.632) 19 Games (Which includes Cleveland) Aug 15: (.714)You wanna know something? These numbers actually disturb some of our fans. Raise your hand, if you're one of them.

Raise your hand, if you're one of them. The only problem with waiting until July to start playing good baseball is that you no longer control your own destiny, you need a lot of help from others. We’ve gained ground on the Cardinals and Giants but still find ourselves 5.5 behind the Braves which is the same distance back we were over two weeks ago. Time is running out. The Braves are 69-59. If we generously assume they finish the season playing .500 ball from here they will finish at 86-76. The Cubs would need to go 23-10 from here to overtake them. That is ignoring the Mutts and how they might play and also assuming again that a good Braves team merely plays .500 ball over their final 34 games. You are absolutely right, all you can do is keep winning and they have been doing that. It’s unfortunately still a long shot for them to make the wild card. They are still not even at .500 yet though they can change that today. If they can keep winning series against these sub .500 teams (and they’ll need to start sweeping some of them, too) and can somehow manage to beat both the Yankees and Dodgers in two weeks? They’ll turn a lot of heads.

We need to finish the sweep of the Marlins (last in NL) and then sweep
Bucs Nats (3rd worst), and Bucs again before we play the Yanks at home and Dodgers away... then we play Rockies (2nd worst) and Nats again with an Oakland (3rd worst in AL) series in between them.
Then, we play 3 in Philly (ugh) and 3 at home vs Cincy (who are flip-flopping with Pirates) to close out the season.
