Letting the most reliable pitcher on the staff walk away would be a Tribune move. Don't do that.
Pay him and pitch him!

I’m starting to come around a bit on an extension, but I still have my reservations. The biggest is I believe if they extend Stroman they won’t be going after either Ohtani or Urias, which to me would be a major disappointment. But where I’m coming around a bit is sort of what chubbycub just hinted at above. You’ve got a good player here now who wants to stay. Maybe it’s better just to keep the good guys now while they are already in your lap and worry about the rest later.
Another option could of course be to have dialogue with Stroman that we’d like to bring him back in the off-season but if there’s a good deal at the deadline to help shore up a position like 3B for the longer haul then we I think we need to do it.br] My dream deal remains Baty from the Mets but I wonder if the Padres could make a good trade partner. They’ve been all in with the construction of that offense and could definitely use some front line pitching help. Even with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks playing so well the Padres could still make a really strong push for a playoff spot in this expanded system. Jackson Merrill, 20 years young and lefty bat, great athlete and top 25 prospect in baseball, could make an intriguing target. Big top prospects don’t get moved often but the Padres have Machado, Tatis Jr, Bogaerts, and Kim all capable of playing the left side of that infield. Maybe they’d be open to continuing their aggressive nature at the deadline.
Or dare I say Tatis Jr being a target for third base? 🤷♂️
Anyways, I’m opening up more to Stroman as a longer term fit, though my perfect world still has us pursuing Ohtani above all else.

That was not a hint. More like a Laurel slap upside Hardy's head. Stroman's ground ball propensity is perfect for our "bandbox".

The length of contract is the sticking point for sure. Even at 4 years, that I believe would give us Stroman for his age 33-36 seasons and Taillon for 32-34. I’m not sure I’d see them adding another free agent pitcher for any deal that would them into their mid 30s this coming offseason, which is a bit frustrating for me. But again, I’m starting to come around on the idea of keeping a good pitcher like Stroman now and worrying about the rest later. We’ll see how Jed & Co. approach it all.

Again , sign the man. They can pin all their hopes on all the young arms they have in the system but to win it all you need an established veteran to lead your rotation and as much as we can dream they aren't signing Ohtani or Urias either for that matter .

As much as I would love to have Ohtani and/or Urias, it's probably wiser to re-up on Stroman. I voted no to re-signing Stro, but I'm probably wrong with that opinion, as it looks right now.

Ohtani just isns't going to happen. I don't see the Cubs going anywhere near what it's going to take to sign him although I think he's totally worth it. Urias is going to cost probably atleast 3 times what Stroman will and although he's a lot younger isn't 3 times better than Stroman and is not really having a great season so far 4.39 ERA and has given up 14 homers in 10 starts . I'm nore confident Stromand can give them a better return on a contract than Urias can .

Something worth discussing as well that no one is really bringing up is part of the original question malaga asked: how long are we all willing to go to extend Stroman? Just look at the comments and the poll results thus far, the overwhelming consensus is people aren’t really comfortable with a deal over 3 years, and some even reluctant to go there. And why shouldn’t they be? He’ll be 33 at the start of next season, there’s a lot of discomfort when it comes pitchers approaching their mid 30s. Stroman is also having possibly the best start to a season in his career. When 34 year old Chris Bassitt can ink a 3 year deal, why can’t this version of Stroman expect much longer?
Stroman himself as expressed he’d like to stay a Cub and avoid free agency but that doesn’t equate to him willing to take any sort of discount to stay here. And even then discounts usually come in the form of dollars, not years. The guy can still avoid free agency and ink an extension in November if he wanted. If he keeps this pace up he’d earn bank on the market.
So…obviously none of us know what he’d be willing to sign for but everyone is saying just extend, just extend. Well, what if just extend means 5/125? 4/110? Who is still comfortable with that?
I like Stroman and would like to see him stay but it should still very much be entertained that he could be great trade capital if we are looking like a dud still in July, and if he likes being here so much he can always opt out and we can sign him then in free agency. I’m not sure I understand right this second what the rush on an extension is.

I’m not sure I understand right this second what the rush on an extension is. To me the "rush" is to just get it done and over with and not have to deal with other teams tempting him with bigger offers in free agency. I get the trade and then sign him in free agency aspect if the Cubs have no playoff chance come the deadline , because he should bring a nice return and they can almost pre arrange that with him that he'll return but to me the focus should be to secure long term pieces for the next winner, not just get more prospects and it circles back to the possibility of losing him in free agency if they trade him. G. If the Cubs are going to win , they need a pitcher like him, if they lose him, then they need to find another like him and it's not all that easy to do , he's a guy who might not be looked at as a bonafide ace on paper but he sure as hell is a guy capable of out pitching another teams ace on any given day, Regarding how far I'd be comfortable with them going year and money wise , there is no point where I'd say that's too much. I'm not saying that to say he's priceless and worth anything , but I'd be ok with them doing whatever it takes. Ideally I'd like to see no more than 3 guaranteed seasons tacked on , but if it takes 4+ I'm not going to be upset.

Suggests all the more why is anyone thinking he’d sign a 3 year deal here? I know Covid and the impending lockout probably had a big play in his last contract , but he was coming off a season when he made 33 starts and had a 3.03 ERA and signed his 3 year deal with the Cubs so that's why I think he'd be more open than people think to sign another similar type deal and on top of it , this time around he knows how much he likes it here and has already made it perfectly clear he prefers to stay and not even go to free agency.

I think Stro has grown and in his presser before his previous start, he gave credit to everyone in his process. From the clubhouse guys to trainers and coaches...showed class. The guys in the infield behind him help his stat sheet, no doubt. If Stroman does get extended, I think we'd have to almost certainly invest in Matt Chapman at 3B (if available for 2024).

Stroman with the super well earned NL player of the week honors. Is he the front runner for the NL Cy at the moment? I’d imagine so looking at the leaderboards. If he keeps this up and looking at recent FA SP deals, I think he’s pitching himself into a 5 year deal easily. Not saying he couldn’t be worth that, just that the conversation of a 3 year extension could be well in the rear view mirror.

I’ve always liked Chapman but with the likely contract he could command in a weak FA bat class and us having a Chapman-lite in Wisdom already, I’m not sure how easy it’d be to swallow that cost. Chapman is for sure the better player but I thought he made more sense for this team before the Happ extension because left field would remain open for an eventual consistent and elite offensive player this lineup desperately needs. Adding Chapman improves an already very good defense and that’d be a beautiful thing, but the positions to look for big time offensive improvement would dwindle to just CF, 1B, DH, and C as the only positions that aren’t locked down through 2026+. So there’s certainly a trade off with Chapman and I’d guess they don’t go that route. Pre-Happ I’d say absolutely. Post-Happ, I’m torn. The opportunities to find some starting position players at our weaknesses are slim and I’d like to think the front office will be very active in the trade market for those improvements.

Part of the reason to get it done now. If he continues to keep pitching like this his price tag will go up . Get him while he's all about staying , it's not going to be easier as he nears free agency and is a legit Cy contender. I feel like this idea and conversation happens all the time with impending free agents. The career year begins and the scramble to lock them up before the cost keeps going up and up. But when has that really ever happened? Stroman looks confident and dominant on the mound right now. He said he’d prefer to extend and avoid free agency, but we have no idea how these negotiations go. Remember that just a few months ago Chris Bassitt, who’s had a somewhat comparable career to Stroman yet is 2 years older, signed a 3/62 deal with Toronto. Stroman is currently having a career best season far better than what the older Bassitt did last year entering his free agency. So he said he wants to stay and doesn’t want to hit free agency but I’ve tempered any thought I have to him doing so on a team friendly deal. Happ and Nico signed what could be viewed as team friendly mini extensions but their situations are very different than Astro’s. So honest question: Stroman is pitching like an ace about to win his first Cy Young award (I say “about” loosely as it’s June 5th). He’ll be 33 by the start of his new contract. If it takes 5/125 to extend him right now, do you do it? Personally I wouldn’t do it right now but I’d be fine exploring that in November or as a free agent over the winter. Just not now because to me that feels like all we did was eliminate our options. I think a big part of my apprehension to committing that to Stroman right now is not just because of the deadline and a desire to explore any return he could net, but also the FA pitching market ahead. It’s weak on bats but very deep in quality starters. Ohtani (28) Urias (27) Nola (31) Stroman (33) Giolito (29) Snell (31) Severino (30) Mahle (29) Montas (31) Montgomery (31) Perez (33) Gray (34) Darvish (37) Kershaw (36) Flaherty (28) Scherzer (39) Yamamoto (25) If there ever was a time to not get too trigger happy I feel like it’s now. There will be nothing but options. So, if they do extend Stroman then awesome, that’s a very good thing. I just personally don’t feel there’s a rush to do so right now. I think with the presence and pedigree of Hawkins in this front office now they’ll likely feel even less pressure to be rushed on anything as well. All said and done here I feel like I’ve made my peace with the subject. I would love to see Stroman here for a long time. We’ll see what happens.
