^^^ That’s some timing I have right there. If around $50 million could get both Bellinger and Alonso signed, I would rather have them over Ohtani.

He's in his last year of arbitration and would likely command 20-25M. Hefty but not detrimental, especially as it's for only 1 season. But then you're trading for just 1 season of a guy, and the Mets are looking to rebuild so it won't be cheap. I was OK with Alonso if Ohtani was in the mix as it would have given a very potent team for 2024, with Ohtani out I don't see much value in a trade for 1 year of Alonso.
For Stroman this is a major boost as the biggest FA arm just came off the board. Maybe he considers pushing his luck and seeing what's out there in free agency rather than picking up his option.

I think as things stand for Stro, he is going to have to come back when healthy and establish himself with 1 or 2 strong starts. I don't know if that will be possible anymore. I see him opting in when the season is over, but I could be wrong. 🤷♂️🤷♂️

Terrible news but the strange part is that the 1st TJS only gave him 4 years of pitching productivity. I wonder if this resets the market strategy for owners when pursuing big arms it should and contracts should be no more than 5-7 years considerig the risks. I've always felt the window for contracts for pitchers should be 3-5 years with 3 being the more common and position players 5-7 and anything beyond that is just asking for the deal to end up on the bad side . But that kind of mentality isn't going to get guys signed when they seem to be seeking double + that length on deals.

That's why I mentioned signing him. The assets in a trade would be determined by the willingness of Alonso signing an extension. In no way do I want the Cubs to give up top prospects for a 1 year rental.

He is a great power bat no doubt but the Muts might be butthurt about getting fleeced when they gave us PCA. It really depends on his trade value and contract demands going forward.

The Cubs don't seem interested in re-signing him and, while it's a good amount of money he leaving on the table, it is only for 1 year. As a free agent, he has more options whereas, if he opts in, the Cubs could trade him this off-season to whoever.

If the Mets know that Alonso will be gone after next season, a trade this off-season makes sense. By allowing Alonso to talk to other teams and negotiate a contract it increases his value. Waiting till next season, there is always the risk of an injury that could derail a trade and the Mets end up with nothing. I'm just speculating but the Cubs are one of the few teams that have the financial resources and farm systems to pull off a deal.

The Mets want to do a fairly quick rebuild/restock , so they'd be looking for mostly near ready guys and I'm sure a guy like Canario would interest them as well as some pitching. I personally don't like Alonso , living in NY I hear a lot about him and he comes off as a bit of a DBag and even my Mets fans friends say that and it probably has something to do with them being willing to trade him because they sure have the money if they wanted to keep him , but the guy can hit bombs with the best of them and would be a great add to the Cubs line up. Mets can't be blaming the Cubs for fleecing them , that's their own fault for dealing him , the Cubs initially asked for Baty.

Sure it is , because all the Mets got was another season from Trevor Williams which was a decent season and are now eft with nothing , meanwhile before PCA even steps into a major league batters box his trade value right now would be astronomical .

I wouldn't give up a top 100 pick for 1 year of Alonso, I'd just resign Belli & also try hard to resign Jeimer as well. That is an offense that if you had it all season along with the young reinforcements from the farm that should/could with the division & with some strategic pitching additions that team could do some serious damage & compete for it all. I'd use some prospect capital on very good young pitching - unless we are able to move Happ which I would really look into doing. I like him, it's just too crowded for the kids we have coming very soon.

I’m not sure I like the idea of Candelario as our third baseman for multiple seasons ahead. For the second half push we are trying to make? He’s a great floor raiser and was a fine rental pickup, but the Cubs need to be thinking bigger than him for our offense as far as I’m concerned. A solid player this season with a less than solid track record, I’d probably rather see that money spent elsewhere and go with some internal option for the short term if no better options present themselves.

He is probably really a 2-3 year contract at most guy even with the season he's having , I doubt teams go beyond that for the reasons you say , less than a solid track record. I wouldn't mind him on a 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd and at some point in year two it's reasonable that Shaw is ready to take over and Candy is back to a utility role.

Not a bad idea, just not overly thrilled with it. And with the Cubs becoming contenders again I’d like to feel a lot more thrilled than that about their production. If they can’t find a bigger time immediate impact player for third base, short term is the way to go. In 2025 Murakami figures to be posted. That gives the Cubs a couple of seasons to gauge the development of the internal guys without taking themselves out of consideration for the big bad Japanese slugger. As long as the Cubs can have secure some banger level production out of 1B/DH for next season, I wouldn’t mind them giving Luis Vazquez a shot at third. I say that purely off the highlight reel though, I haven’t seen him play day in and day out. You’re a big minor league guy, how legit do you think the bat and glove of Vazquez is and is he worth consideration as the starting third baseman next season if the lineup looks really good everywhere else?

Thinking Candy will get at minimum a 3 to 4 year deal for at least 16 plus million per year if he has a semi strong or strong finish to the year in this very weak hitter free agent market. Another thing going for him is ability to play first or 3b.
A lot of people are throwing out absurd contract numbers for another guy (yes, fully aware of his past injuries) with an on and off record.
Thinking the Cubs will sign Candy in the off-season.

Thinking the Cubs will sign Candy in the off-season. This is definitely worth keeping in mind. Regardless of whatever happens with Ohtani the rest of the season, the landscape has changed. Any of the other tier A free agents likely saw a bump in their earnings ahead. This includes Bellinger, Chapman, and Candelario. Two years for Candelario based on the season he’s having seems too light, and in this market someone will push those numbers. 4/60 seems plausible to me, and I hope the Cubs aren’t the ones who pay it.
