The draft is a few days away so it's time to discuss who you'd like to see the Cubs take.
In the past, I've wanted the Cubs to pick a 1st rd college player but this year I am favoring a High School kid. I think the potential of a much higher ceiling is appealing. The Cubs have invested so much in player development over the last 7 years or so that it makes sense to pick a HS stud and develop him.
My 1st Round hopeful is.... OF Austin Hendrick, West Allegheny High School. (Ken Griffey Jr meets Bryce Harper)
Hendrick of course might not be available when the Cubs pick so my fall back pick is
Robert Hassell, OF, Independence (HS)

I'm not really sure the Cubs risk going with a high schooler in the first round. My guess is Garrett Mitchell given the Cubs track record with college bats and his overall tools. Oddly enough MLB.com's latest mock draft have the Cubs picking Mitchell as well. I personally do not think the Cubs have the luxury of going with a high school player in this years draft. Mainly because you have Bryant, Rizzo, Schwarber and Baez all potentially being free agents and we have to replace so much of the pitching staff next year. When you look at their payroll issues they most likely would like to find a guy who can be ML ready in year or two vs. potentially waiting 5 years on development. I think if Mitchell would have been able to play a full season this year, building on his previous season, he could be a top 10 pick vs. being middle of the first round. I say the Cubs take a flier based on need and potential.

My other reasoning on why the Cubs may avoid high school players here: There is a good chance Almora gets DFA next season if there is no season in 2020. At least as of right now you have to at least plan for Schwarber leaving via free agency and Davis is losing a year of development with no minor league season. I think if Mitchell is available here the Cubs jump all over it.

Why would this be beneficial? I don't get it.

Why would this be beneficial? I don't get it. It would be a lame attempt by the owner by telling the union they cannot even pay their draft picks because of the revenue loss they are facing. I doubt this happens though, but if it does then union can file a grievance because it would be bullshit.

Why would this be beneficial? I don't get it. Money, strictly money and not wanting to pay for something they won't use this year, and they'll get compensated for it in next year's draft when presumably (hopefully) teams do not have cash flow issues. Don't have to pay the projected signing bonus or the slot value for that player, which for top 10 comes in at just under $5 mil., up to $8.45 mil for the top pick, with potential bonus pool money for players that want more, on a player that may or may not even have a place to play in the minors this year.
Any thoughts which team it might be? My thought is Pittsburgh, with Baltimore being the dark horse just because of their financial finagling over the years.

100% the Pirates, also I think the bonus money is deferred over a couple of seasons.

I wonder if it is at least partially due to players not playing and teams having nothing recent to go on. MLB draft is more of a crap shoot than other sport anyway. Now try and evaluate a player who hasn't played in months.

I wonder if it is at least partially due to players not playing and teams having nothing recent to go on. MLB draft is more of a crap shoot than other sport anyway. Now try and evaluate a player who hasn't played in months. Two initial thoughts on this: First, like you suggest, fear of not being able to properly evaluate a player. Second, next years draft is going to be deeper since this year is only going to have 5 rounds and many college players are going back to school for another year of eligibility. If you have two picks in the first round you will have more slot money to sign players in the later rounds. That would be a huge benefit in a deep draft when you could draft three first round talents. Lets just say that it is the Pirates, they are a team clearly who did not make any effort to get better this offseason and are slotted to pick 7th this year. Odds are they will be picking in the top 5 next year (est. slot value of 6.5 million), then they can turn around and pick 8th (slot value of 5.5 this year for the 7th pick) plus they get a "competitive balance" pick. They could have 15-18 million to spend in the draft and if there is an abundance of college players, the odds of them being able to sign them for under-slot value is extremely high.

Why would this be beneficial? I don't get it. It would be beneficial because they would have more slot money next season and there will be an abundance of college players entering the draft. Colleges have extended eligibility to players for next season because MLB has shortened their draft. That means there will be more players declaring and there will be more players willing to sign for below slot value (since they will not have the option to return to college). It has less to do with money than it being a tactical advantage over teams for next season when the draft is going to be deeper and you'll have extra time to evaluate players. The Pirates are primed to do this season since they are a competitive balance team as well and no hopes in improving in 2020.

First 4 picks all college players. Can’t help but think most teams are avoiding HS players without a senior season. Might undercut a closer to ready college player Cubs pick. Or maybe Theo & Co go oppo and pick an overlooked HS stud?

Only the Rangers and Phillies remain before the Cubs.
Some really good options to choose from, I am hoping for Mitchell but I doubt Phillies or Rangers pass him up.
