I was hoping for Mitchell too, seeing as he was the 6th rated player overall. But hoping Howard works out too, but not liking the Larkin comps given that was the Russell talk...

After watching video of Howard picking it and him being a local kid I like the pick.

Something scared teams away from Mitchell so I will give the benefit of the doubt on that, anyhow I really like the Howard pick. Potential elite defender, quick and has some upside in that bat that could push Javy to 3B in 3 years.

Ed Howard .... ?? Best defensive player in the draft but Im not big on drsfting high school bats. Good thing then that he was drafted for his glove. Ba-da-tish Highly rated defensive SS. Bat needs work. Several years away. Let’s hope they can sign him below value and get some high quality in the next rounds. Veteran Baez at 2B, with an elite defensive rookie at SS could be fun to watch. Who knows by then what the cubs infield will look like. Just happy to see something baseball related happening.

If Howard was a college player, IMO, he would have been the #1 pick.... Shit, if he played his senior season in HS he would have been top 10, maybe even top 5. Cubs got the guy with the most upside in this draft. Upside is one thing, production is another, I get it, but the Cubs roster is still so young, they didn't need a player that was 1-2 year away. I really really like this pick. Howard is a tireless worker and if you wanna see how strong he is, check out his workout videos.
IMO, Howard will be a better MLBer than Nico.

I do not know much about the players drafted but It does seem this organization believes in picking SS so it doesn’t surprise me that is the position we took. Everything I’ve read from you am so line said this could be a good one. Let’s hope he pans out.

hometown local kid, was the star of the 2014 Jackie Robinson West team that advance to the finals in the little league world Series too!
This kid has seen the big stage and thrived, the Cubs did good here.

Mind as well take a risk and swing for the fences. Pretty much the Dodgers approach and has worked out great.

Love the Howard pick. Nicknamed "silk", he is an elite defender and bat should come around as he fills out (will be a nice sized player in a few years). The game is not too big for him and seems very mature already. Getting the best SS in the draft is usually a pretty good thing, like the ceiling

Cubs Second Round Pick: Lefty College Reliever, Burl Carraway. best college reliever in the draft. Per Bleacher Nation:
After taking local prospect Ed Howard, the best high school shortstop in the draft, last night in the first round, the Cubs kicked off day two going in the opposite direction: the best college reliever in the draft. It’s Burl Carraway, a short lefty with an explosive fastball (upper-90s), and a massive curveball. This is a fun one at number 51 overall.
From Dallas Baptist, Carraway was ranked in the 40s by MLB Pipeline and FanGraphs, but a little further down by Keith Law and Baseball America. The divergent opinions, as you’ll see, are tied to some obvious questions about how you project a guy who is just six feet tall with a small frame, has a max-effort delivery, and looks like a reliever with two plus pitches. I’m not saying, I’m just saying: last year, in the first round, the Cubs took a shorter, hard-throwing pitcher with two plus pitches (Ryan Jensen), and they are betting they can make a starter out of him. I wonder.
Carraway has been a pure reliever in college, which, combined with the shut down, means he’s thrown a whopping 51.1 college innings. That’s it. This is another huuuuge swing by the Cubs. I like these big risks. I also like that new scouting director Dan Kantrovitz has such a strong track record with college pitcher selections.

Could be somebody that doesnt take long to make it to the majors if they keep him in the pen.
And the more I hear and read about Howard the more I like the pick.

Burl Carraway sounds like a guy who can see MLB action fairly quickly, maybe by next season.
