Matt Shaw, SS Maryland BIG 10 TEN Player of the Year High ceiling bat but not sure he can play SS long term due to below average arm. Most scouts think he is destined for 2B or he would of been much higher in the draft Yeah , not worried about him not sticking at shortstop , finding a shortstop in the Cubs system is the least of their problems. He had 24 homers in 62 games this year

With Swanson likely staying at short for years to come , between the Hernandez brothers, Traintos , Vasquez, Made, Rojas , Ramirez, Howard , Valdez , Shaw finding a 2b should not be a problem. 3b , now that's a different story. With the glut of middle infielders I figured they'd be giving Traintos a better look at 3b , but he's not played there at all this season.

Baltimore Sun - Friday: Matt Shaw is a ‘freak’ of a hitter who could become Maryland baseball’s highest draft pick everExcerpt: The Athletic’s Keith Law, a former executive with the Toronto Blue Jays, might be most smitten of all with the Maryland slugger, whom he has going to the Chicago Cubs at No. 13. He sees a prospect with an unusually high floor who could handle second base, hit for a high average and approach 20-home-run power. In other words, a potential All-Star.
“I think I’ve planted a flag a little bit in saying he’s what everybody says they want,” Law said. “He checks pretty much every box for a college hitter. It’s a good swing. He’s got a good idea at the plate, doesn’t whiff a lot. He makes very hard contact, and it looks like a lot of his power will carry over, even if some home runs become doubles. It’s going to be more than enough to make him a premium offensive player at second base.”

Not out of the question they move him to 3B, he does have a below average arm BUT does have really good footwork. Madrigal had a worse arm but his footwork helped to close the gap

Looks like a very nice pick to me..

Pipeline had him ranked 16th in the draft class Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 55 | Run: 60 | Arm: 45 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55 He should rate good in prospect listings since Law already likes him , lol.

With pick #68 (CB-B round compensation for losing Contreras) the Cubs choose RHP Jaxon Wiggins from U. Arkansas. He missed the entire 2023 college regular season due to Tommy John surgery (UCL elbow). Apparently, the Cubs are willing to take a chance on the healing hard thrower ranked #103. He did appear in the June MLB Combine.

Thanks for the info on these picks everyone. Pretty exciting to see them pick what sounds like a pretty high floor/high ceiling college bar first, especially after all the pitchers last year. Then a pretty decent gamble with a TJS arm.
It’s all a crap shoot anyways and I know nothing about these high school and college players but I like what I’m reading at least.

Jaxson Wiggins is a high risk/ high reward pick. Recovering for TJ but his stuff is electric but does struggle to command and control it at times. He could be TOR caliper pitcher or flame out quickly, we shall see.
The Cubs likely also choose him as a underslot pick as they likely have their eye on somebody tomorrow.

Seems like an underslot pick as he was ranked 103 . I like the Shaw pick a lot , the more I see and read on him the more I like the pick. Wiggins, not so sure about. I know it's more about stuff than results , but his results had not been very impressive and add in the command and control issues on top of TJ recovery and I'm not so sure he wouldn't have been there for their 3rd pick at 81 or even 4th pick at 113 so like you said they probably have their eye on somebody today that they'll have to pay over slot for,

Jaxon Wiggins - From what I've read: Power arm with ability to touch triple digits with good movement. The change is OK but he needs to develop a feel for it to work off the FB. The Cubs must think they can develop the change. Although he has a swing and miss FB he will need to work on his command. Toyed with a slider but not much there, at least for now. With TJ in his past and a small arsenal, I'm guessing late inning reliever is his ceiling.

I will have to check on that. A year ago, ESPN had Wiggins as the #3 draft prospect going in to the 2023 season.

He was once thought to go much higher in the draft but he had a really brutal final month or so of his season and then ended up getting TJS. “Something” like that, and that’s what tanked his draft stock. So it sounded like the potential was quite high.

Cubs draft SS Josh Rivera a senior out of Florida. Good overall hitter and power showed up this year, Mayo said he can play SS,2B or 3B.
Possible another underslot pick.
