Wondering the same, honestly. Especially wondering what the Cubs bid was. But if the Dodgers were going to go that high, they never had a chance. And honestly, don't think I would have wanted them to handcuff themselves that much.
Just hate the damn Dodgers, even before the signing of Ohtani. They are the Yankees of the NL, trying to always buy themselves to WS win.
I hope Ohtani does well, as I like him as a player, but hope everyone else falls apart around him.

I don't know how or why baseball allows such deferrals , but lets say he's getting 30 million a year over the next 10 years with 400 million being deferred over the next 40 years after his playing days, that's only 10 million a year extra on their payroll every season he's not playing which for a large market team isn't that big of a deal . While 700 million sounds insane , if this is the way the contract is structured and I'm only speculating by the rumors so far , but this is actually brilliant and I would not have minded the Cubs doing this at all. Especially since he's a guy who will make you a shit ton return on merchandising and such. I hate the Dodgers , but thinking about it , if this is how it is , brilliant !!

Not sure why the hell you're not banned from this place but if you're going to stick around it would be a good idea.

Great, so the Dodgers get Ohtani and it doesn't hit them as hard as it should. And now they can go out and get another big FA. How more satisfying it would be to see them wilt early in the playoffs.

Heyman saying in the end it was between the Angels , Blue Jays and Dodgers So the Cubs didn't even make one of the finalists? Disappointing. Makes me wonder even more what their offer was.
Edit: Saw in the other thread what the Cubs offer was. Apparently $575M and up to $600M with incentives.
A fair deal. Can't ask the Cubs to pay more than that. Glad they didn't pay $700M.

I’m not disappointed at all over this. The only way I will be disappointed is if they don’t spend on a big name like Yamamoto or Belli or both.

If the Cubs signed both Belli and Yamamoto, I would be very happy and also any disappointment I had would be an afterthought. However, I don't see that happening.

If this signing is any indication of the coming trend of $400m/$500m/$more contracts, be prepared for 25% increase in ticket prices (each year).

Somebody will have to tell what the actual luxury tax hit will be but something I thought of was let's say Ohtani were to sign a deal after this one with "XYZ" team for 4 years - 120 million & they defer 1/2 of it over the next 6 years following his playing days so over a 10 year time period. Okay, so he gets 30 million a year for the next 10 with the Dodgers from 2024 thru 2033 - then the deferred 10 mil. per year from the Dodgers for the next 40 years (2034 thru 2073) His next contract with XYZ is 15 million a year from 2034 thru 2037 & then 10 million per year for the next 6 years (2038 thru 2043). WTF? These deferrals are bull shit because in this very possible scenario he is counting against luxury tax amounts for 2 different teams during 2038 & 2043 so who's to say that a different player signing shorter deals couldn't have a situation where he counts against 3 teams luxury tax hits in deferrals for the same damn years. MLB needs to get control of this situation because it is a "work-around" for teams to avoid the luxury tax penalties so they are allowing legal cheating..

Exactly , the luxury tax was put in to deter the huge spenders from signing everybody and this beats the system , they need to put a limit on how much can be deferred. So much for Bobby Bonilla day being a thing anymore , his 1 million every year looks like peanuts now.

The estimate luxury tax hit appears to be around $43 AAV which obviously is a huge reduction from $70 million
Dodgers got plenty of wiggle room to keep adding and they will as they really need TOR pitching and rumored to still br in on Yamamoto but I see them trading for Glasnow,

So much for Bobby Bonilla day being a thing anymore , his 1 million every year looks like peanuts now. The luxury tax penalties are minor and easy to get around in the grand scheme of things, especially for owners who have more money than they know what to do with and/or are willing to spend. For example the Mets had to drop 10 spots in last year's draft and guess what they still got their guy in the draft. Draft manipulation by both the team and player are easy. Say you wont sign and than magically sign. Other owners for business purposes smartly use the luxury tax line like the big bad wolf.

Roberts will screw anything up. After they fire/mutually part ways with Roberts I hope they somehow get David Bell, Marmol, or Rossy to manage.

Sounds like the Cubs max offer was $550m, they dropped out when told others were beyond that. Dodgers added $100m in deferred money the final day to seal the deal.
If Ohtoni adds $25m in advertising/promo/marketing as mlbTradeRumors reports, Cubs could have gone higher.
