Bob Nightengale said the Cubs were never going to offer $500 million for Ohtani in the first place, and made it sound like the Cubs are the ones that dropped out. I call absolute bullshit, the $500 million the the starting bid and they knew that, so why would they waste their time in the first place? if true, then only superstar this team will have is one they can develop themselves and have to let walk in 6 years in free agency. I hope Cubs do land Ohtani and make Nightengale look even more foolish.

Even Jesse Rogers, which I consider a lot more reliable than Nightengale, is saying much the same. The Cubs were basically upset he reported it too early, that’s why Hoyer had words with Nightengale. Not upset because it wasn’t true. www.si.com/mlb/2023/12/06/cubs-gm-jed-hoyer-confronts-mlb-insider-winter-meetings-over-shohei-ohtani-reportI had hoped the Cubs might actually have actually signed Ohtani. I really hope they don’t just have a lot of small to medium ones like prior years. If they don’t get Ohtani, then they need to get Yamato. But that still isn’t going to solve the huge bat they need in the line-up. And no, Hoskins isn’t enough.

Granted guys don't usually play 162 , but his career 162 game average 36 doubles, 36 homers , 98 rbi's .353 OBP .846 OPS , those are damn good numbers and would pretty much replace what Bellinger did last season if they lose him. What I'd be very happy with is bringing back Bellinger and signing Hoskins , adding his bat to last years line up would have been a difference maker.

Hoskins makes perfect sense for the Cubs and himself, so I am assuming a deal will eventually get done at some point this offseason which will very strong add, but he cannot be the top highlight of your offseason either.

Ridiculous. And didn’t he get injured and can’t pitch next season either. May this contract handcuff the D’s for years to come!

Dodgers get over a billion a year on their TV deal alone, they are a financial powerhouse with unlimited amount of resources They are 3 time offender over the luxury tax and now just committed to continue to be over it for the next 10 years. Dodgers are in a league of their own, the good news is they suck in the playoffs

I wonder what the other bids came in at for the Dodgers to go to 700.
While no player can really be compared to him , this contract could change the entire industry forvever because not contracts of half that worth which had been deemed as the elite now seem feeble.
No wonder why Harper is open to an extension on a contract he's got 8 years remaining on.

But is that deferred money counting towards the luxury tax payroll every season he's still being paid after his playing days ? I think it is , right ?
