I want to include Winter Meetings but the title line won't allow more characters.
I know we're hanging on by a thread on life support, but I wanted to get a head start on this.
Priority # 1 - Pay the CBT!!!
# 2 - Find or develop arms for the BP!
# 3 - Resign Belli.
# 4 - Sign Yamamoto
# 5 & 6 - Decide and settle Stro/Prof contracts
# 7 - Another impact bat for at least 1 season via trade? Soto or Alonso.
More ideas, let's hear them.

As a matter of fact, I think Jed will praise him for overacheiving even if they don't make the playoffs. Gut feeling. |

As a matter of fact, I think Jed will praise him for overacheiving even if they don't make the playoffs. Gut feeling. With Jed making such an effort to rebuild the farm system, at some point, he has to decide if Ross is the right guy to develop these youngsters. With how he handled Amaya, Mervis, Canario and PCA I would say no. Plus, I don't think Ross is a very good in-game manager. |

Suzuki to DH, I know his recent hot streak probably isn’t sustainable but he does seem to have figured something out and even a reasonable semblance of what he’s doing now could be good. Obviously his defense isn’t the best so this opens a spot for 1 of our young outfielders (Canario?) going forward |

I don't have a real problem with how he handled the kids other than Mervis and then Canario after his big game. Would I have liked to see them play more, no doubt , but I understand why Canario wasn't playing when he was called up , he does usually struggle initially when called up to a new level but once he did get a chance and had the 5 RBI game , then I had a problem with not playing him after , let the kid ride out a high and atleast give him the next game. Amaya , I had issues with his lack of playing time when Barnhart was still around and Tucker was getting time, but this last month , sorry Gomes was playing well and was clutch with the bat so it was hard to sit him and you also wanted the more experienced guy handling the staff in cruicial games. PCA isn't ready and was called up at a bad time , he isn't going to do much with the bat if he's not getting regular at bats and is just a pinch runner and defensive guy who maybe hets an at bat . He needs everyday at bats to adjust . Mervis , should have stuck with him longer, his hard hit rate was pretty good and he hit a lot of balls right at guys. But he did look like a deer in headlights quite often. |

5. Trade for Alonso , I used to be against getting him , I don't like the guy and think he's a tool but he'd be a great fit in the line up .
You sign Belli and keep him in CF until PCA is ready ( looks like he will need more AAA time) and you have Alonso at 1b.
Alonso is on the last year of a contract which os often a good time to get a guy.
When PCA is ready at some point in 2024 you put Belli in RF and DH Suzuki.
In 2025 you can move Belli to 1B and Caissie should be ready by then who can be your main LH DH and they can mix and match and move guys around.
Also need to get bullpen help , but it's so hard to plan that since bullpen pitchers are so random and erratic from year to years.
There are a LOT of talented arms in the system , but most have high walk rates, they really need to work on that with these kids.

Best way to tackle this, at least in my opinion, is to keep doing what they've been doing. Get as many optional or low cost arms as you can to begin the season. Ross needs to be quicker at figuring out roles next year. Quantity is better than quality going into a season. Then as the season progresses and you get nearer the trade deadline, you identify relievers having good seasons and target those relievers in trades depending on your need. This is where you have to have a wealthy farm system. 2016 is the framework for this, when they acquired Chapman. They gave up a lot in prospect currency to get him. But he was a piece that really helped to win the World Series (despite blowing game 7). Rondon wasn't horrible in 2016, but a lockdown closer was really going to help the 2016 team so that's what they acquired. Bullpens are just too volatile to really predict in the offseason. You can throw a lot of money at bullpen arms in the offseason and you might get lucky for the next season. You can also throw not a lot of money at bullpen arms, depend on quantity, and still get lucky for the next season. Or you can do either and get a sucky bullpen. At least with quantity, the odds favor you that you'll eventually find personnel that can do the job - might take 2 or 3 months like it did this year. Then you trade for top bullpen arms as needed during the season. It's going to cost you a lot in terms of prospects (Caissie if he continues next year, would probably be a popular bit of currency) but you're more likely to get a reliable bullpen arm at that point (for that season... the next season? Who knows). |

My moves: priority number 1 trade for Soto and sign to extension priority number 2 fire Ross and replace with Melvin if Melvin is let go priority number 3 just fire Ross priority 4-25 fire Ross.
What I think the Cubs will do: sign Bader for CF as a quasi platoon until Tauchman is DFA, either trade for Alonso or sign Hoskins (don't think Mervis as any future in this organization, raking 2 years with no real opportunity), they will let Hendricks go after Stroman opts in, think they will give Morel an opportunity at 3b, fill the pen with optio-nable low cost arms and unfortunately they will keep Ross.

I’m not trading prospects for a rental of Alonso. I don’t think the Cubs are close enough to winning to start unloading the farm for one year of a guy. There are still holes in this team that need fixed, and if they get Bader and/or Chapman, I’m going to be pissed.

I’ve slowed down a bit on the trade for Alonso discussion. Last thing I read he is seeking a 10 year extension with the Mets. That makes me think a trade for the guy is likely limited to just a 1 year rental as while I love his prodigious power, I wouldn’t want him around for the next decade.
Makes me wonder what makes him think he can get a ten year deal? Is it the long term contracts handed out to Turner, Bogaerts, and Machado last offseason? Makes me wonder who else could be seeking a mega lengthy deal, maybe Mr. Bellinger? All signs point to yes as I see it.

Mike Schildt? I really, really liked how he managed to get the most out of what was pretty limited (and aging) assets. Some of the other names out there don't thrill me much, and while I agree that management may choose to stick with Ross (yet again), and I'd like him to have a part with the organization, but, just not the every day, every play, decision-making position.

Bellinger gave the vibes at the presser that he is not coming back. Maybe looking way into it but was talking in past tense with nothing about hoping to come back this offseason.

That would really be unfortunate, but not all that surprising. It is after all a business and all you have to do is look no further than who his agent is. Boras is going to create some fantasy based PowerPoint deck that portrays Cody as the number 1 target on the FA market due to his 2way game. While I don't disagree in principle with that premise, he has not done it long enough for me to open the checkbook for anything longer than 5-6 years at a 25M AAV. I'd rather explore options via trade like Soto, Alonso, or even Ramírez from the Guardians. |
