Jordan Bastian @mlbastian 45m Cubs say that Yu Darvish will indeed throw a three-inning simulated game on Friday. Obviously, still have to see how he feels in the a.m., but that’s the plan as of now.

Jordan Bastian @mlbastian 6m Cubs manager David Ross, on fleet-footed outfielder Ian Miller's 8th-inning run on Friday vs. White Sox: "Isn't that fun to watch? Bunt base hit, stole a base, moved up and then scored on a wild pitch. It's impactful. He's in the mix, for sure."

Darvish supposedly studied and worked on his 4 seamer and spin rate during the off season and said he's improved it, and alo refined the knuckle curve Kimbrel taught him more.
Coming out of the gate in spring and sitting at 97 with no effort this early and with the knuckle curve and command he has I think he is a legit Cy candidate this year. Especially since he now has confidence and swagger , he just looks bad ass out there.

Hendricks velocity is up.
The ESPN gun had him at 88-89 a lot. FanGraphs has him averaging 85.8, 86.9, 86.9 on the fastball the last 3 years (87.8-88.3 in 2014-16).

If he can keep his velocity up a few ticks, if will be interesting to see if the delta between his FB and CHG increases, and what impact that has. Could be another very solid year for The Professor.

Jordan Bastian @mlbastian 30m David Ross says Tyler Chatwood remains "in the lead" for the 5th rotation spot: "He's got power stuff, but I think Chat's in a really good place and a head space and his outings have been very powerful and he's made a statement."

Yes, especially with MLB cutting down on sign stealing. It's got to be hard to fool a hitter with a changeup when he knows it's coming.

I'd go with Chatwood until he proves he can't handle it and then they have a decent option in Mills who has looked pretty good. Chatwood has a higher upside and could be dominant if he can command his wicked stuff and stay confident. Mills might be a safer bet to give you more consistent starts but I like him more as a long reliever than a starter.

It might be an interesting intellectual exercise to compare Chatwood to the Cubs fifth starters over the past decade.

Have a seat Cub fans, not going to like this news:
Nick Castellanos and Scott Boras both said the last time they talked with the Cubs was at Nick's season ending exit interview.
But this is one I heard over the weekend and The Score wonder about it this morning, but I heard Javy, being so close to free agency at this point wants to test free agency. I don't know how true that is, and I have a hard time believing it, but boy that would be brutal. Last week there was a report that the Cubs and Baez were "far apart".

Not surprised they could not afford Nick and also not surprised all the bullshit about them having a deal in place hoping to clear payroll was just that, bullshit. I'm pissed off there seemed to be no effort to keep him , but realistically other than trading Heyward or Schwarber there was not a fit. I did not really want Heyward in CF , but I really wanted Nick back so if that is what it took so be it. Regarding Javy , the media really has no clue what is going on and this off season should prove that to you. There were also reports last week they think a deal gets done before the season starts. I'm not worried about KB's and Javy's free agency until the day I see them file.

I don't buy Javy, I think he's 100% open to getting something done, now even, but I think this falls on the Cubs and their unwillingness to add money. KB, I've pretty much convinced myself that the Cubs have no interest in extending him and he's as good as gone at the deadline or next winter meetings.

“[Yelich’s deal] doesn’t haven anything to do with mine. I’m happy for [Yelich]. Hopefully, we get mine done. We’re working on it.” He also added that negotiations between his team and the Cubs were “progressing.” - Javy's quotes from less than a week ago, pulled from a bleachernation article. Writer also mentions at the end of the article that he's less optimistic than he was previously about it. I haven't heard anything about Javy wanting to test free agency, that's probably just more rumors and speculation. Maybe somebody closer to the situation has that intuition, no idea. But when I hear it from his mouth I have to think he's interested in extending.
Doesn't surprise me either about Castellanos, I can see where that was fans own foolish thinking in trying to justify a way to keep him. I don't know where the rumors came from, but it doesn't surprise me that a Boras client had fake rumors floating around that would assist in bumping up his value.
