Per Jed & Theo, Zobrist not too far from returning this season. Jesse Rogers says according to his source, September. "I think there's been a little definition added to how he hopes this thing might go," Epstein said. "But again, his priorities right now have to be with his family situation. There could be a point later on where that would allow him to be ready and come back, but nothing's been determined yet." "He knows the door's open," Epstein said. "We'll see how things evolve. I think we'd all love to see him back here and he'd love to be back. So we'll see if that can come to fruition."

Zobrist was already struggling at the plate this year and if he isnt going to come back til September it's more than likely at that point he wouldn't have picked up a bat in 4 months. What exactly would you expect him to offer the team? A lockeroom presence? At that point I would be more inclined to tell him theres a spot at the end of the bench for him and to bring his tennis shoes and leave the cleats at home.

But I'm not sure if his coming back means there is nothing left budget wise for the deadline. I'd still love to get a guy like Watson. Love to have Ben back, but they need another lefty in the pen more than Ben on the bench. And I'm one of the biggest Zo supporters there is on here.

Uh , did you ever think his struggles might have had to do in part with what was going on ? This did not just come up recently, he reported to spring training late so this was something he was already dealing with and trying to play through.

Spring training exists for a reason and I would be willing to bet players spend more time keeping warm in the offseason than Zobrist has spent since early May. Not going to see Kimbrel for close to a month after signing him and hes supposedly kept himself in game shape this whole time. Zobrist takes a 4 month break and likely has nothing to do with baseball in those 4 months and is rumored to want to return for the last month of the season and it's going to be grab a bat you're hitting 5th? Riiiiiiiiiiiight.

A Struggling Zobrist who has not picked up a bat in 4 months is still an upgrade over Desclaso. Pretty sure he will play a few games in the minors when he returns and likely just be a pinch hitter who makes a spot start here and there when he returns.

I doubt if there is even a small chance that he won't pick up a bat for 4 months. If he is planning to come back, he is working out and likely getting hitting practice. At his age he can't stop working out if he wants to play.

I was cautiously optimistic when the Cubs signed Descalso... the guy has been a disaster in a Cubs uniform.

CONSPIRACY THEORY WARNING....this is just a thought
Ok, slow baseball time and a thought just crossed my mind. Who was Mrs. Zobrist caught banging?
My pea brain thinks it is someone she and Ben knew..someone very close to the team...someone on the team?
Someone who was quickly whisked away to show respect for Ben.
Someone who is seemingly banished until Ben retires.
.......Mr. Ian Happ?

I had heard a far different rumor, but I'll leave it at that. In any case, seems to me that Happ and Zobrist would have to have pretty similar schedules, and it would be much harder (though always possible <cough, AHEM, cough Sandberg> that another player is involved -- Julianna would have many more chances for a liaison while Ben was away). In any case, Happ was banished because he wasn't producing, and he's staying banished because his Iowa performance is dismal.

Julianna seems to desire more attention in a circle beyond just baseball, a more national spotlight. I'd have to think that a guy like Happ isn't really the solution for that unless she had revenge in mind. Until there's actual evidence I chalk it up as simply made up rumors because we've been provided no information, just imaginations run wild, unless she's been spending more time in Iowa than normal this year.

Kind of a sensible theory. But I think Happ is where he is strictly because of his issues at the plate and a roster crunch. And he remains in Iowa because he still is not where they want him as a hitter. Although a recent hot streak might make things interesting if the league figures out Garcia and he gets sent back down.

And what if the Cubs front office knew they needed a closer (Kimbrel) but the only way to afford him was if someone (Zobrist) took time off on the restricted list?
My little conspiracy theory is that the Cubs setup someone to bang Zobrist's wife and for Zobrist to find out about it... thus allowing the Cubs to sign Kimbrel.
Tin foil hat time!

Lol. I'll just say if that were true I would have a tough time continuing to root for the Cubs.
