The Angels push might be as much about a last ditch effort to keep Ohtani by showing him they will commit to winning, as actually making the playoffs this year.

I doubt he stays there , one push isn't going to change his mind. It's not like they haven't tried before, they've made a lot of signings and spent a lot of money in his time there , they haven't been missing the playoffs because of lack of effort , they've just been horrible with their choices on who they've signed.

Ohtani did tell the FO not trade him at the deadline. It does not mean much but also shows he does not have one foot out the door either, if the Angels make a big effort he could re-sign him he will highly consider staying with the Angels.

I actually hope he does , I don't want him on the Dodgers or SD or in the NL period and the Cubs have no chance to sign him in my opinion so I'd rather he just stay with the Angels but I don't see it happening. He probably said not to trade him because he doesn't want all the attention and pressure a trade would bring along with him and he probably doesn't want to go through all the change of a new team for a couple of months. I don't think it's because he wants to remain an Angel. Like I said , they have been trying to win , so this little push to buy and not sell isn't changing anything. T hey've spent between 182-226 million on payroll the last 5 seasons. They just have no clue how to put together a winning roster despite having the games two best players.

Like you said the Angels just don't know how to build a winning a team and a lot of that is because they have a owner who gets in the way on the roster construction as he forces the FO to make Anthony Rendon and Josh Hamilton type signings and has no patience and on top of that makes the luxury tax the salary cap in payroll too. So spend stupid money and cry poor once you get near the luxury Tax and don't value developing your own players in the farm and if a prospect does develop you just trade them away for veterans. It is a mess and even after these trades it still is.

Since 2017, Trout's highest number of at bats in a season has been 471. Difficult to be considered the best or 2nd best or any best when not on the field on a consistent basis.

He also hasn't been the same in the field as he used to be given all of the injuries.

Right, and they still don't get it , it's a good show of faith for them to go for it, but it more than likely adds to their futility moving forward. They just traded two of their best prospects for pitchers who are going to be there for 2 months and lets face it , they really have no chance of going anywhere if they make the playoffs unless they trade the rest of their farm for more help these next few days and then when they don't win they are left with no farm and a max exudus in free agency.

From mlb trade rumors
The Brewers and Pirates are in agreement on an intra-division trade that’ll send first baseman Carlos Santana from Pittsburgh to Milwaukee, reports Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Twitter link). Minor league infielder Jhonny Severino is headed back to the Pirates in the deal

Angels have been playing a the Yankees who have been struggling, Pirates and Tigers which helped give them this illusion they have a legit shot. Their Schedule gets really tough after this Tigers series. at Blue Jays 3 At Braves 3 Mariners 4 Giants 4 At Astros 3 At Rangers 3 Rays 3 Red 3 All teams that have better records than the Angels and will still not have Trout back.

If you aren’t going to sell, button and go for it, because the teams ahead of us will be doing just that. Santana isn’t some massive addition for them but it raises the floor of their first base production since they’ve lost Tellez. And they are already in the lead. If Cubs aren’t going to sell they need to get better and add where they can.

The ONLY reason that the Angels aren't trading Ohtani is because the fan base would storm the castle so to speak if they did & they really don't want that. There is almost zero chance that the Angels re-sign him after the season because he does want a chance to win & there simply just isn't one with LAA & there won't be while Trout's & Rendon's contract are running..

That sure doesn't change the fact that they really do need some guys though..

I'd imagine if the Cubs are buyers then they will try to package in guys like Young and Velazquez into deals , solid AAA players having good seasons who have no real place on the Cubs and are taking up 40 man spots and also major league guys like Wisdom , Madrigal and Rios (good luck with that last one ) .

I agree & there are teams with low payrolls that will be interested especially in guys like Wisdom & Nick. Then again if we don't grab a 3rd. baseman we'll probably have to play Madrigal. I even contemplated the scenario where you contact Colorado or Detroit & offer to take either KB's or Javy off their books if they pay down their contracts by 35% & plug them in at third but I just don't know if either one of them can consistently help us out offensively enough to be worth their deals for that length of their deals.. Very sad.

I'd be on the phone talking with the Pirates about Bednar before they deal him elsewhere. He will cost a few really good prospects but he's under control for 3 more years & is really tough..

Arenado to Dodgers? He’s reportedly willing to waive his no trade clause to get the fauk out of St Louis (can’t blame him there) and the two sides have discussed names…

I wish the Cubs can get into that but no chance in hell the Cardinals will ever talk to the Cubs about doing a trade like that., Cardinals fan will burn down Busch Stadium alone.

I wonder if the Cubs could engage with a team, like the Athletics for example:
"If you'll trade your prospects X, Y, and Z to the cardinals for Arenado, we'll turn around and give our prospects A, B, and C for Arenado"
But the no-trade clause kind of negates that happening.
