Just a brief chat about our assets and what you think we might do if we are 10-15 games under .500 right b4 the TDL.
1. I think we will definitely sell Belli for a top 100 prospect. 2. Stro will net us a top 100, maybe top 50. 3. Gomes, Smyly, & the Prof are other names I'd try & flip.
I doubt Suzuki & Taillon are going anywhere. I know we still have about a month b4 any serious chatter starts but with this dismal O & BP I am starting to think about next year already. I don't have faith Ross or Jed can turn this thing around.

Well it doesn't look like they will have their usual deadline assets to trade and that's desired bullpen arms on short term deals so it's a tough call on the others you mentioned. I don't see them being very active at all in any mjor trades , probably only some minor deals , but I could be totally wrong and there could be a couple major ones. And if there are players available with multi years of control , I could also see them being buyers. I'll start with Stroman , if they don't plan on extending him then he is definitely gone and should bring a lot. If they want him as part of the future it's possible they do trade him and then take their chances in free agency but I doubt they go that route becsuse they can probably get him on an extension for less since he's flat out said he doesn't desire to be a free agent. So it's either extend , or trade. Belly is a tough call, the injury really changed things because it's going to be harder to read if he is back to all star caliber Belly or not with him missing time at a crucial judgement point. Hawkins is on record as saying he hopes they can find a way to keep him here longer and I've also seen an article that Boras doesn't want the Cubs to trade him so he's a real tough call. If they feel they don't want to or can't extend him , then he's still solid trade bait as is because if anything he's going to provide a team with elite defense. Gomes , I really don't see them trading him , they love the guy and they have a 6 million team option on him for 2024 and he's the perfect guy to have around to ease in the transition of Amaya to the starting catcher . Smyly I don't see them trading especially if Stroman is dealt. I think they need a reliable veteran in the rotation and he's been pretty damn solid for them and he doesn't want to go anywhere.

Well, the Cubs were predicted @ +4 wins this year, I believe before Swanson was signed. They will have to go 52-48 from right now until game 162 to get there, which in and of itself is not a point we can say they are competitive again.
3B, 1B, CF, C are unresolved and I only say C is that way because of all the pro-Amaya folks saying Gomes should go which leaves us with no experienced backup like Gomes was and everybody liked that idea. I guess I am throwing Barnhart out for complete lack of offense. It's not his fault that the TEAM is 7-17 or whatever when he starts.
The surprising result of Morel's little streak is that they went 5-7 during that stretch. The sparkiest player in MLB can't get this team going?
And Mervis...did ya bring him up to play or did ya bring him up to be broken in slowly and easily by not playing him against tough lefties? How are we going to know what he's got? Put him in and leave him in! I'd keep Bellinger for now. And if Stroman wants to be a Cub, keep him. He could be leading the majors in wins AND ground ball outs.
I dunno what to do with Wisdom. Does black magic work on white guys? (Jobu) Is it Slaughter time? Or do we try the White Sox' #1 draft choice who is currently in the Cubs' MiLB system? Again?
Bottom line is that they are still rebuilding. Or, if you prefer, retooling their 74-88 team to win four more games than that and not getting anywhere. At this point last year, they were 3 down in wins and starting the 10 game losing streak. If they sniff 6 this time, somebody in management has to be replaced. Trade deadline or not.

Pretty powerful comments from Stro today. Looks like the Cubs will be selling again.

Pretty powerful comments from Stro today. Looks like the Cubs will be selling again. Marcus Stroman @str0 2h Replying to @chiefcub My agent and I made multiple attempts to engage them on an extension. Club wasn’t interested in exploring it now. Will see how it plays out! Love everything about the @cubsorganization!

You have to admit, if Stro extension was announced it would have sent a good message to the fan base. Based on Stro’s comments sound like the Cubs weren’t even willing to talk 😬

I see no sense in trading major league talent for more prospects. Hoyer has done that for 2 years. You can also include drafts and international free agent signings that he's been part of. Instead of "kicking the can farther down the road" it's time to address the needs of the ML club. I will agree that Hoyer, Hawkins and Ross don't seem up to the challenge.

Also the FO needs to handle players and contracts a little better. Stop offending the players. Just say "hey stro, we're thinking we should wait and see what makes sense for the organization at the tdl. We love you man but have decided to go this route for now. We'll be in touch and try to keep you in the loop when we can."
Effortless words. Saves the bad pub from players twitters accounts and hurt feewings from the players themselves.

In addition to the obvious of Bellinger, Mancini, and Stroman, if they want I think the Cubs will be able to flip Fulmer, Leiter, and Merryweather for the usual toolsy/raw A prospects. Can never have enough given success rates.

They're gonna give 1/4 of a Stro extension (or what that looks like) to STEELE and solidify his 3 arb years and probably buy 1 year of FA and 1-2 option/buyouts. If he bounces back from this forearm strain. Who knows, it could have sent up red flags and now we just ride the wave like Arrieta.

Based on Stro’s comments sound like the Cubs weren’t even willing to talk 😬 Stroman overstepping with his comments imo of course it’s always better to keep it private, but sometimes frustration gets the better of players. We all saw it with the 2016 core, especially Rizzo being the most vocal. Here we are again seeing it now with another player, unrelated to the core. I mean, I get it, Stro’s age brings concern, but you have to at least listen to Stro right? Doesn’t sound like that happened.

I think they sell. It's annoying to me in that you can only sell for so long, at some point you have to be building back up. I know there are prospects to come, but most are still 1-3 years away. At some point you say the time is now and you keep/acquire rather than trading off.

At some point you say the time is now and you keep/acquire rather than trading off. I don’t think sell has to mean what we think it means. Look at last year, the Cubs were in sell mode but consider the trades that were made/not made: - Happ was rumored to be available but ultimately stayed and signed an extension. - Contreras was definitely available but the front office didn’t sell simply for the sake of selling on him, instead balking at what were apparently all lowball offers. - Effross to the Yankees for Wesneski who has factored into the immediate rotation/pen(?) plans and figures to be an important part of this pitching staff going forward. - Robertson was traded to Philly for Ben Brown, who has since been fast tracked and now in Iowa, perhaps prepping for his MLB debut sometime this season. - Martin was sent to the Dodgers for McKinstry, who while never excelled here was also not traded for some 20 year young A baller the Cubs were forecasting out to 2025. Instead, they rolled the dice on a quality AAAA player that they hoped could be a nice versatile bench player with an immediate impact. Nothing that happened last deadline was reminiscent of the Darvish, Bryant, etc trades. Now I think where we are all at is we’d love to see them start adding impact players at the deadline for a playoff run, and that time definitely needs to come sooner rather than later. But if the team isn’t in a position to make that type of run come mid July, which at least for me was never really an expectation I had for 2023 (though nor did I have the expectation that they’d be the dog shit team they are right now either), then there is still a path to selling off excess parts for players that they view as ones helping the big league club win as soon as next season. That’s where I think you can explore some selling moves that make sense this deadline without setting us back (thinking Bellinger if he comes back soon and red hot plus some parts from our organizational depth for a young but ready third baseman, or a hotshot young arm). Selling sucks but if that’s where we end up this deadline I’d like to believe it won’t be like the big grand sell-offs of the past where we don’t see those trade returns make their MLB debuts for several years later, if ever.

Specifically my answer to the question asked, yes, I think the Cubs sell. Even despite how awful this team is, I think the plan was to sell all along. And I’m okay with that because that is how I envisioned this season, the last building block of the rebuild. Come November there are no more excuses as far as I’m concerned. Jed would have had the time needed to turn this ship around in his own vision with a rebuilt farm system, rebuilt organizational tools for development and scouting, multiple free agencies and trade seasons to make the moves he saw necessary, time for Hawkins to acclimate and bring his success from Cleveland into our system.
Come November the rebuild is over and the Cubs need to be back. Make great deals next month, be active in a very deep free agency pitching market, develop the younglings and take this division by storm starting next April. My .02 cents.

I agree it won't be like previous years, but I do think they'll move valuable pieces that aren't locked down. It's unfortunate as I think Bellinger and Stroman are the 2 most solid pieces on each side of the ball and the ones that currently are the most productive, but also most likely to be moved. Just look at where this team has gone in the past month or so without Bellinger, that's what they're going to revert to if they move him, and it's just more rebuilding. I love prospects, but at some point you've got to have veterans on the field that are getting it done. At some point it has to go away from building for the future to playing for the now, and those types of moves just kick the can further down the road, IMO. They might net great prospects, but it's just a longer delay.

Here is my problem with them being active in a deep free agency pitching market. I'm not convinced they will be , or they will do anything to improve if they are. They apparently have no interest in their current ace who's a legit Cy Young candidate so what leads you to believe they'd be active in the free agent SP market to the point they'd get anything better than what they have. The thing is you never know how a guy will pitch with a new team , will he click with their philosophy, will he adapt to what they want to change etc etc etc . example Taillon , most people thought he'd get better here, there is still ample time for that to happen but so far to be honest , he's sucked . Stroman they already know what he can do here, aside from the first couple months of last season he's been excellent and one of the better pitchers in the league and a guy who wants to stay here . I get he's getting to an age that is a bit risky for pitchers on a long term deal , but really with how pitchers get injured these days, what age isn't a risk?
