The cubs have an embarrassment of riches. Everyone knows it. I think teams are going to ask for more and hold ground knowing they'll get more because the cubs can give more. In that scenario the cubs may be shut out if Theo is unwilling to overpay. I don't want him to overpay but he may have to. And, it's due to his own fault. Not that that's a bad thing. He's a genius but the cubs cant be shut out. This bullpen isn't going to get it done in the postseason. Youre most likely going to see what us fans consider an overpay. It won't matter if it brings back a world series, though. But, the cubs can give more so teams will expect more. They I'll try and bleed us dry. Look what Ken effing Giles brought back to the Phillies last season. Vincent Velasquez and Mark Appel, granted Appel is a shell of himself from college but Velasquez is good and a future TOR pitcher. Plus, a project with high upside in Appel. All for a closer. And, not one with the resume of Chapman or Miller. It's rough out there in the trade market. San Diego got a nice haul from the Red Sox for Kimbrel, a closer, too. Being completely honest with the situation I think it's going to be ugly just to get Doolittle, too.

It's not about who. I think any current prospect is tradable. It's about how much. Kimbrel brought back four prospects. Miller should bring back four even better prospects. Do you really want to give up candelario, vogelbach, happ, and McKinney in one trade? What happens when you go after a starter then and gave up four for a closer. Soler, Torres, and Jimenez might not even get it done in this trade market. And, if it does, then your cupboard is bare after just two trades,one being for a damn reliever.

The thing with our roster is we are set for 4 more years. We have plenty of time to restock the farm. |

Don't be afraid of that. I've had that same thought but the market will dictate what the Cubs have to give up. If the Cubs offer more than another team in a deal, that offer will get it done and the other team won't ask for more just because they have it.

Players most likely to be traded are the ones that are blocked or maybe the front office isnt as high on as some perceive. I trust that theo will do what is right for now and the future. We are not in a situation where we have one shot at the postseason. |

I understand we all want them to not overpay but at some point they are going to have make a deal to put them over top.Now I agree with a rental like Chapman i would rather not do that but for someone locked up for a few years well they might have to.They are in a good spot with certain players blocked and a bunch of trade chips.They have a huge chance here.

Hopefully it is a deal with the A's for Doolittle & another RH reliever for a package that includes Soler, Szczur & a #4 to #7 prospect (NOT Candelario) for Doolittle & I hate to lose both MLB players but you have to give to get & I really think Jorge is going to battle hammy problems his whole career.. I'm hesitant to just wait this out for the lefty BP guys that we need because 2 deals ahead of the deadline might take Miller & Doolittle out of play.. That would be bad. |

It had been hoped that he’d avoid a trip off of the active roster, but evidently Doolittle wasn’t progressing as hoped."" Well, that changes things.. |

all they have to do is top another team's offer which will be necessary to get their guy no matter what. the team trading their pitcher will be doing themselves a disservice by passing on the cubs offer (assuming it's the best offer) just because they could give more. that said, we could see a game of chicken commence but i'll take theo every time in that scenario.

I would counter that the wealth of riches is a great problem to have. How would you like to be Baltimore trying to compete with the Cubs for pitching help?
The Cubs are always going to get the last call in trade negotiations...that is an excellent bargaining position to be in.

I'm still not completely sold on the idea that we NEED another bullpen arm. I like Edwards. I like Patton. I think Conception has potential. Let's give these in-da-house options a solid opportunity before overpaying for another team's domestic abusing closer.
Let's still think trade, but look a bit toward the future, and see if one of these young gun type starters can be had. Blake Snell might be available from the Rays for the right package. The Twins need help pretty much with their entire ballclub. They might be willing to part with Jose Berrios for a quantity. Francis Martes might be available for quality from the Astros.
I agree with Jsnhbe1 that our trade chips need to be used for bigger needs.

I also think that a side effect for having Contreras/Almora on the roster is that other teams won't necessarily ask for them all the time in trade negotiations. Young major leaguers are worth more than question mark prospects.
