Pick a couple free agents or trades and put a lineup together. Best looking possible lineup wins!

After a extremely crazy offseason 2b Nico H Ss Swanson Lf Soto RF Judge DH Ohtani CF Trout 1B Bellinger 3B Devers C Gomes SP Cole Nice try but its unrealistic that gomes starts over amaya next season. 😉. Im starting to get ohtani fever now. 1 Nico 2b 2 Suzu rf 3 Ohtani dh 4 Happ lf 5 Morel/mervis 1b - yeah you heard me 6 Wisdom/vazquez 3b 7 Swanson ss 8 PCA/Alcantara cf 9 gomesy/amaya c Defense ✔️ Power ✔️ Speed ✔️ Best in the national league? This leaves a lot to the youngins. Im cool with that. If its an issue at the deadline we pick somebody up to help. The kids need a chance or we'll forever be filling the team all over with FA. The slack gets picked up via pitching with the signing of yamamoto or Nola, and kimbrel or chapman in the pen. 3rd base and cf seem the toughest positions for us to figure out. Madrigal and pwis (and morel too i guess) seem like trade candidates and those positions have holes either way. We need 1 yr deals for a cf and a 3b to hold it down with the kids. If we land alonso for the year, hells yeah, but i dont think we crumble with morel and mervis testing that corner out for the first half to see if it works. Who's at 3rd who fits the bill defensively AND offensively for 1 yr? Who fits the bill at CF for 1 yr? There's some type of disturbance in the force telling me we might begin the big money payroll this offseason. Are we ready? But anyway, for the purposes of the thread I'd like to see one HUGE bat added to the team and for HUGE things to come from within from Suzu, Happ and maybe Morel or Mervis. I might not win todays prize, but thats my go at it. Since im rambling anyway, with ohtani in a lineup, it would be really cool to see suzu and ohtani hitting back to back in the same lineup. Exciting is what that would be. The marketing value in japan would be outrageous. The new Bryzzo?

I think we've switched outlooks .

Wow , am I the only one who still thinks they have no chance at landing Ohtani ? Did I miss some rumors or soemthing ? Plenty of rumors, but who knows what actually has substance or not. Most of it is likely fueled by the Counsell hiring as it seems logical you don’t blow the market out like that and drop 8m/per on a manager unless you’re ready to spend and improve the roster. Of course there is the alternative that’s possible too: Counsell did wonders with a low payroll franchise for years now. Maybe they are thinking he could maximize the youth we have while not necessarily adding a ton further to the payroll. Still a better situation for him than Milwaukee and the Cubs chances improve there, though I hope that’s not the case. I’ve said since last offseason and never left the bandwagon, the Cubs have just as much a shot as anyone. It’s a matter of willingness to open up the pocketbooks but they are certainly capable and there is a ton of logical narrative here that it makes sense for them to do so. Just because they haven’t much in recent years doesn’t mean they won’t now, timing is everything. Coming off a 10 win year over year improvement with a top 5 farm and a manager hire on a record setting contract certainly seems to me like the timing is pretty good. It’s all hopium, but the Cubs have a shot regardless.

I don't see any team outbidding the Dodgers maybe other than the Giants, and I doubt he wants to go there. My only hope is he doesn't like soCal.

Getting Counsell obviously shows the Cubs willingness to cut ties with things they feel they can improve on (Ross). We'll see....

1) Hoerner 2) Happ 3) Suzuki 4) Bellinger 5) JD Martinez 6) Swanson 7) C Santana/Morel 8) Urshela 9) Gomes/Amaya
If Bellinger does not resign I think they either obtain Bader or give Canario the first crack at CF.

PCA CF Hoerner 2B Ohtani DH Swanson SS Happ LF Suzuki RF Candelario 3B Morel 1B Amaya C I would love these acquisitions but I'd probably tweak the lineup a bit. I think it's very possible that we are a finalist for Shohei but it will all come down to him choosing us over the left coast.. PCA CF (Probably Tauchman until early May) Ohtani DH Hoerner 2B Suzuki RF (Not for long unless he stays hot with the bat) Happ LF Swanson SS Candelario 3B Morel 1B Amaya C

Hoerner 2B Happ LF Y.Diaz 3B Bellinger CF Turner DH/1B Suzuki RF Swanson SS Mervis 1B/DH Gomes C
Hoyer makes the trade to acquire Yandy Diaz and Glasnow from the Rays. The reason I included Bellinger is the lineup is stacked with RH batters. PCA would fill the void if Belly signs elsewhere. I didn't include Ohtani because the Cubs have multiple holes to fill. The offense, starting pitching and bullpen all had stretches where they floundered.

The offense, starting pitching and bullpen all had stretches where they floundered. I’m all for Yandy Diaz but if you trade for him it’s as your first baseman or designated hitter. Innings at 3rd base, DRS, UZR, OAA, fielding % 2022: 839.0, -14, -0.5, -8, .978 He was so bad there in just 2/3 of a season that he was bumped off the position for 2023. He’s very immobile, but has an immaculate eye at the plate. I’d wonder about his new found power surge and whether that’s sustainable or not, but at bare minimum three seasons of a consistent .400+ OBP, 10+ % BB rate and ~13% K rate? Hell yes please. Totally worth ponying up for him and Glasnow. Eat their salaries and feel comfortable giving up 2-3 good prospects for the pair would be an awesome deal for the Cubs. Or if they want a third baseman Paredes and Glasnow would be good target pairing as well. But I absolutely would not pony up some good prospects for Diaz and then start him at third base.

Quality read. The article helps further show how mediocre this class is in top tier talent/impact. Really hope the Cubs focus on Yamamoto and stay far away from Japanese import 2. Can see the Cubs convincing themselves on Jordan Montgomery, Lucas Giolito, or Jack Flaherty if they strike out on the Toyota GR Supra or Toyota Corolla.

Nico 2b Happ lf Ohtani dh Alonso 1b Suzu rf Madrigal/Wisdom 3b Swanson ss PCA/Canario cf Gomes/amaya c
Ohtani, alonso, suzu - I'd hate to be the pitcher.
Oh- mervis gets a promising number of at bats when ohtani misses time, alonso gets a break and pinch hitting.
Rossy comes back for 3rd catcher duty.

One more try
Nico 2b Happ lf Suzu rf Alonso 1b Luis Robert Jr cf Mervis dh Swanson ss Wisdom-Drigal 3b Gomes/Amaya c
This is a pretty solid n sturdy lineup
Leaves money for an ace starter, a co-closer and the odds and ends.
