The Marlins haven't even played yet, but the Cubs and Cards will resume Friday per MLB. How the fuck is that going to happen? Excuse my language, I'm pissed at the Cards, they should forfeit games IMO Between now & Friday the "Clean" Cardinal players will be known & only those players plus guys from the alternate 30 site will take the place of the infected & others in protocol against the Cubs. Not to really piss you off but there were rumblings over the weekend where they were discussing the possibility of not making up the games & just using "winning percentage" which I will call BS instantly due to the Cardinals not having to play the pretty good Brewers team.. I don't agree with winning percentage, either. If Marlins forfeit all of the games the remainder of the season, they will have a .667 winning percentage (2-1) which will place them into the playoff for sure. These games should be counted as losses as a penalty, if the outbreak is indeed caused by players going to a casino. Now if they count how many wins then it makes more sense.

I know, my point is, they were shut down for what, 10 days.... but the Cards will play in 4 days (5)? I can't see it happening by Friday. Players are showing symptoms. KB had to miss 2 games and he didn't even have COVID.

I think they just need to have no new positives for two days in a row to resume play, but they are not going to resume play until a new series starts. I dont know what todays STL tests brought. but say the dont have any new cases by wednesday they will play this weekend.

Manfred was the guy that mentioned winning percentage & I don't like it because it is possible that teams would miss the good competition & play the bad which isn't even remotely fair.. There won't be any forfeited games though.

Excuse my language, I'm pissed at the Cards, they should forfeit games IMO How is the great question. MLB did not think this through. If the Marlins are out 14 days they should be done. How do you make up 14 games. 14 double headers? The Cards are Marlins would appear to be done. Why would another team with no positive tests want to play them and risk the same shut down? I just read the Cardinals have a 58 person travel squad. Why teams don't keep a split squad (AAA) at the home park for practice and use as sub team I don't understand.

Here it is.... 7 players and 6 staff memebers for Cards have COVID. Entire Tigers series is postponed. Cubs series will likely be postponed as well. The problem is more players have been exposed but are testing negative now. They might be positive tomorrow or the next day. Which that is the case, tells you the accuracy if these tests doesnt mean a thing and all of this is really for nothing

So the Cardinals tested on Wednesday, played the Twins, played another game and then found out Friday they tested positive. That, to me, is the problem. The tests take too long to get results. So it isn't as simple as removing guys who tested positive because in the time since you tested they could have spread it to others and so on and so forth. So you got to contain it to the point that you know no one has it with multiple negative tests and accounting for the delay in results. Seems like it spreads pretty quickly and easily, so just removing people who test positive isn't good enough.
That is how I see it anyway.

Well as long as it looks like they are following the protocal that is all that seems to matter. I go back to last week when Juan Soto said he tested positive 6 times, but none 2 in a row to get him reinstated.
There are obvious flaws in testing so who knows.
But they need to look at the bigger picture 28 other teams are NOT having issues and that includes the teams who played them , so the on field way of playing IS working.

Can’t we just kick them out of the league?

Which that is the case, tells you the accuracy if these tests doesnt mean a thing and all of this is really for nothing Not that I want to defend the accuracy of the tests, but there are a few Asian studies showing that when the viral loading is low (i.e., when a person is almost recovered), the tests can be at the borderline levels of positive and negative. The tests are like any analytical tests that are subject to some sensitivity threshold. As a result, if a person test negative one day and positive the next day, his viral loading may be very low but he was clearly infected. The key is to wait for a few more days for the viral loading to go even down so that the person can have two negative tests in a row per CDC guidelines.

The problem with that is that it also penalizes the team they were supposed to be playing. Not fair to the Brewers, Tigers and possibly us that we have fewer games because the Cardinals effed up. Same thing can be said about forfeits but the other way around. Give the Tigers 4 free wins that can really have an impact on a 60-game season. If you are going to penalize a team it has to be specifically on them and have no impact on the other teams. Forfeits and counting Ws impact the other teams. You could give an offending team a % deduction on their winning percentage. That is basically how they do it in soccer. They get 3 points for a W and 1 for a tie instead of keeping Ws and Ls, and teams that break the rules can get a points deduction from their final total or be banned from (what is essentially) postseason play. I think that is more fair. But then you get into having to find the "reason" why they were infected and if it was preventable and that is probably impossible. So I doubt that happens either. The NBA is using winning percentage. I agree it isn't ideal of course, but nothing about this is ideal. I think it is the best option if we have to go that route. If anyone is still reading this thank you for reading "Jessica's Stream Of Consciousness Writings of the Day".

So if baseball decides to use win % to seed playoffs and for argument purposes the Cubs play 60 games and Cards play 40, would that be fair?

So if baseball decides to use win % to seed playoffs and for argument purposes the Cubs play 60 games and Cards play 40, would that be fair? I think that if the Cubs play 60 and the Cards play 59 that could be unfair. But I am just saying it might just not be 100% fair this year. Its playing out in the NBA where there is a logjam for the 9th seed and spot in the new play-in game, and Portland has played more games than everyone else and has an advantage in the winning % department. If they all end up the same number of games above/below .500 Portland will win. Not fair at all, but its where we are at right now.

If a handful of players test positive the whole squad is out even after several days if negative testing? Why have an expanded roster? Why not split the squad away from each other? Is this a serious question? Have we not learned anything in this 6-7 months? If a guy test positive and is around the other players, he could have infected the other players and those infected players will not test positive right away but are in fact infected. Therefor, you cannot have "a handful of players test positive" and then simply remove those players. The players being around those who tested positive need to be quarantined and separated from the team.

A split squad that is separate from the other club is the only solution but that does not make for good baseball at all. Of course, it makes for better baseball than no baseball so there is that. The only way to minimize this situation in the future is to complete quarantine the players from the outside world until the end of the season. It's complete lockdown and when they travel, the team travels with a sanitation team that moves into the hotel a day prior, sanitizing the hotel they stay in. Another solution would be to simply count all the games a team has to forfeit because they have an out break as loses. That would put a lot more pressure and in house responsibility on the team.
