Well.. Matt Boyd was different pitcher last year, he now attacks with Changeup and does not use the Slider as much which was causing he get hit hard in the past and why even though he missed a ton of bats, his ERA was always in the mid 4s This is a major gamble signing, but if he can stay healthy a full season and he can continue to pitch the way he did to finish the season and the postseason, you got yourself a potential TOR starter, he was very impressive but cannot really count on him to make 30 starts too. I am hoping their is the roll the dice and see what happens type signing and not somebody they are expecting 150+ innings from in 2025 Boyd pitched 40 or so regular season innings and whatever amount in the playoffs. Slim evidence of a significant positive change in production. Including 2020 Boyd's regular season IP (rounding up): 60,79,13,71,40. Expensive roll of the dice considering the Cubs treat the lux tax as a semi soft cap. This is Hoyer's and others thinking they are smarter than everyone else. I cannot disagree with you, you really cannot count on him to pitch every 5 games and give the needed 150+ innings from him, that is asking way to much out of guy who has not done that since 2019 and now 33 years old. This cannot be their big rotation addition, but knowing Jed it is.

I know some pitchers have issues after TJ , but I think there is a chance the TJ erased all those past seasons of elbow issues , so I'm not overly concerned with his past seasons innings totals being what they were.

You'd think after winning it all and seeing the benefits that come from it and being in the playoffs year after year that Ricketts would want that again and not what's been happening. He has to be over his Covid mind frame by now.......I hope.

Ballesteros and Horton for Rooker? Yes!!!! Sorry, I think the Cubs should sell high on Horton, he is insanely talented but I do have serious concerns about his ability to stay healthy long term and I would take the bet he becomes a bullpen arm over being an ACE. I would not add pCA but you don’t need to and makes no sense for the Cubs, while you gain a 6 Win player you are also trading away likely 4 wins to get him which makes his impact a lot less to the team. Those two , I'd do it because I kind of feel the same way about Horton , he's giving me Mark Prior vibes all over again , but he had PCA in there too and I would not even do him straight up. Rooker is 30 , how many good years would they get out of him? And he's not a good OF . PCA has a rare skill set which I think is tougher to find than raw power and PCA is 8 years younger that is an insane over pay for a guy thats had one great season . So you'd add Horton in a Rooker deal, but not a Vlad Jr deal? hmmmm

If the rumor mill is right Soto will sign soon. If Soto does not sign with the Yankees, the Yankees are going to pursue Hoerner and Bellinger.

All the major market teams are in on him and making offers (Except one team), so Soto does not need to sit around and wait for the market to develop it is red hot right now and should be resolved by the winter meetings and if not then WTF is he waiting for?

The last leak was probably to signal to NYY need to up their offer over 600M like the Red Sox and Dodgers have.

I wonder what the Boyd signing means for Wicks, Assad, Wesneski, Killian and Brown? Trade fodder? More bullpen options, and a hell of a battle for the 5th starting spot? Pitching, pitching, and more pitching. I can't get upset with this signing. I like this signing, some people here have had their eye on Boyd going back to his pre-covid Tigers days with massive K numbers in 2019. If the rotation was stronger and missing just one arm I'd love it. This feels more like a safety add that can be flipped if needed, as a 2 year deal isn't' a long term plan. And he theoretically might not add a ton in depth due to his injury history.
I hope this doesn't mean that some of the young arms are trade fodder, as those are so hard to come by. But if they can be used to sell high on legit high end talent I'd be in. My fear is they trade some of them for a middle of the road player that's under an affordable deal for a few years rather than a true impact player. I think Assad's fade last year shows that he might be best as a 6th man/long arm guy. Killian and Brown looking more like bullpen arms. Wicks could be on the outside looking in as he's got little value in the pen and appears to be a back end starter at best.
I do wonder what this does for a rotation with lefties in Steele and Imanaga already. Rarely do you see 3 leftys in a rotation with all the righty bats in the game.
I suppose we already knew that Fried was out of the question, but this cements that. Bummer that they're giving up on big pieces this early.
You are correct, this is a move you make if you are either rebuilding or already have a very solid starting staff in place and you’re trying catch lightening in a bottle in the fifth spot in the rotation. I’m waiting for Hoyer to prove me wrong but I seriously do not think he can build a playoff caliber team. He doesn’t appear to know what the Cubs actually need, he’s well aware the Cubs have needs but addresses them in the most ignorant way possible. I know a lot of people on here like Taillon because he posted a good era last season but Hoyer is throwing 33 million dollars in the back of the rotation. A team that apparently has money issues just spent 30 million on a lottery ticket. That is not intelligent spending by a long shot.

The Yankees do not have the prospects to get Bellinger and Hoerner. They may not need the prospects as the 3rd largest market may just be looking to dump salary. The humorous part will be when the Cubs eat half of Bellinger's salary. I am not a believer in Bellinger but just keep his short-term contract, let it play out and force prospects to push the issue. This all has to be due to tv deals/revenue/upcoming CBA as this is not making much sense.

After the addition of Morgan with what are likely locks on Merryweather, Hodge, Pearson, Miller, and Little, combined with all the fringe starters we have in Wicks, Brown, Wesneski, etc etc, that are pushed back with the addition of Boyd and hopefully still another starter, I don’t know where else they are planning to add pen arms. Unless they are planning on being very active trading partners. This is why adding OOMPH over depth is so much more valuable in a roster like ours. Every addition just feels like it further adds to the glut that has us coming out of back to back 83 win campaigns.

The TJ surgery cost a huge chunk of 2 seasons & the flexor surgery before that a year so I don’t think it is as risky as you do but I also want Sasaki & would consider that an A for starting pitcher signings.. Sasaki alone would make it an A . I'd be ok, if it ends up Boyd and Buehler. Not what I was hoping for but I just don't want Boyd to be the top pitcher they add this winter. I was expecting more although this could be an excellent signing if he pitches like he did last season he was right up there with the bigger names performance wise. My issue is , it's the same old same old , Dodgers shop at Macy's and sign a guy like Snell , Cubs shop at the thrift store and sign a guy like Boyd a much more conservative move. I thought Jed would get bold with his job on the line , guess I was wrong. If Jed is done then he’ll need to update his resume very soon.. I do really like this signing but we need more.

The Cubs would dump Bellinger for nothing, because Hoyer is stupid, but the Cubs are not going to add Nico, who has 30-40 million in surplus value, just to move Bellinger or would they take less on Nico to move Bellinger. Yankee fans keep talking about this because it makes sense for them but it doesn’t for the Cubs. Also, now they added Boyd, the stupid Yankee rumors make even less sense because they wanted Stroman to come back to Chicago. Bellinger and Hoerner to new York would require Dominguez and Jones and little cash going to New York.

I love the potential of Dominguez bat, but he MAKES Schwarber look like a gold glover so he's pretty much strictly a DH which would mean Suzuki is back in the OF and then what do you do with Caissie? Not crazy about Jones , he doesn't seem like anything the Cubs need , why another OF when they don't have enough room for the ones they have?
