I would tend to agree.
This is why I'm more of a fan of just having a ton of optional arms that you can call upon from the bullpen.
But the Cubs have done this for so many years, that they're starting to run out of optional arms.
The Cubs didn't give up anything of any value for Miller, so I'm OK with this move. Slaughter was never going to see MLB time with the Cubs.
But just because the Cubs traded for him shouldn't mean he's never on the potential to be DFA'd list.
You just really can't horde non-optional bullpen arms. If they're performing, then that's great - you definitely want to keep them. But if a non-optional bullpen arm isn't performing, you've got to be willing to let him go even if he finds success some where else. You'll find another bullpen arm to replace him.
This is also why I'm not a fan of spending a ton of money on bullpen arms. Neris is a prime example. He's non-optional. He's not really performing all that well. But you can't cut him because of his salary.
If the Cubs were good at developing bullpen arms I could understand not spending money of free agents. BUT THEY'RE NOT. Taking a starting pitcher and using him in the bullpen goes against what is constantly talked about and that is to get to a starting pitcher before he settles in and finds his rhythm. I believe the root of this is in what the Cubs look for in starting pitchers, because the majority of relievers are failed starters. As an organization the Cubs tend to err on the safe side when it comes to pitchers, as they are less of an injury risk. That means they tend to target guys that aren't high velocity types, the types that eventually can become high end relievers. So they simply don't have the arms that can blow guys away because they don't seek them out.

Speaking of developing Pitchers...
6 Games for Jerimiah Estrada now. 0.00 ERA / 0.88 WHIP / 8IP - 9K
El Paso 2.08 ERA / 0.87 WHIP / 8.2IP - 20K

So weird after all the hype I read about him over the last year plus as he rose through the system. Cubs fucked that one up.

They did not in the past , but they even claimed going into the last draft and this winter they are looking more for velocity types. The organization isn't lacking velocity types, it's lacking ones that can harness is , which often comes with that type of pitcher. A lot of the arms they've been signing going back to guys like Merryweather have been velocity types.

Literally lost him for nothing on a waiver claim. So weird after all the hype I read about him over the last year plus as he rose through the system. Cubs fucked that one up. when he was up with us he threw almost exclusively fastballs and really struggled The issue was that he was young, the stuff was very good, and he was optionable. That optionable part won’t help when you are trying to clear a 40man spot but it was certainly questionable if he was the right guy to use for that need at the time. He struggled with us mightily in 2023 but he also threw just 10.2 innings over the course of the season. Losing him for nothing over 10.2 innings when again he was young, talented, and optionable always seemed like a dumb decision to me.

I wasn't happy that they lost him when they did because I thought he could be the closer of the future and that was way back when he was in the lower levels. But I can't get all bent out of shape yet over 8 innings of work.

For sure. The sample size of success is too small right now.

We kind of have a history of not getting anything or at least not much for players that end up doing pretty well. The trade for Caus another example I know there wasn’t room for Velasquez in the overcrowded outfield prospect situation but seems like we could have gotten more for him. Last I saw he was doing pretty good with new team. Maybe Caus will develop into an effective reliever but so far I ain’t impressed. Don’t even start me on schwarber

Velazquez is not doing much this season 37 Games / 3 Homers / 11 RBI's / .654 OPS Puts what Happ is doing into perspective39 Games / 1 Homer / 13 RBI's / .634 OPS EDIT: The average OPS this year, has dropped 37 points, to .697 .697 is the lowest average since 1989www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/majors/bat.shtml

If Happ finishes with 575 AB's
To finish with a Slash of .250 / .340 / .420 / .760 35 Doubles / 21 Homers / 90 Walks
Happ needs to Slash .261 / .361 / .466 / .827 429 AB's / 112 Hits / 28 Doubles / 20 Homers / 67 Walks
Obtainable. But as of now, Happ needs to "go off" - Just to reach his Career Low OPS (.757) Seems mathematically probable that Happ will have a new Career Low.
We have 118 Games remaining.

Miller has looked pretty good so far , 4 innings 1 hit 0 runs 3 k's no walks and he comes in throwing strikes 36 out of 48 pitches which is something the pen has not done a lot of.
