A true shame, the end of an era. They had so much good information, and on a weekly basis. But they've been irrelevant for years unfortunately.

SI is the Rolling Stone of the sports world. Not my favorite.
I will say they did a nice job on SI Kids back in the day though.

During my youth I was a Sports Illustrated subscriber, and magazine copies were sent to me while I was serving in Vietnam. At that time, I taped a front cover with Ron Santo to my army Quonset hut wall. I still have a photo of that. In 1990 when I told Santo about it, he smiled and asked, "What year?". When I answered, "1969", his eyes shut while his chin slumped sorrowfully to his chest.

Let's face it , the Swimsuit issue is what we all looked forward to!
As a kid I was a subscriber well into my teens and twenties and loved S I .
But then the internet hit and magazines were pretty much going to quickly become obsolete.
I used to love magazines and every year I could not wait for the Street and Smith's and other baseball ones to come out that would have rosters and predictions and I'd pretty much buy every different one that came out.

I always preferred The Sporting News. Jerome Holtzman, Joe Falls, Bob Broeg. Can't name a single SI author that I liked reading back then.
Those were the days when the Sunday paper sports section had a list of the top 100 or so hitters and the top 50 ERA pitchers. From each league.

Yes, the sporting news was the best and I chuckled when I read your last sentence because that is the first thing I'd do when I opened up the sunday paper, turn right to the leader page

Heck, yesteryear's sports section was bigger than today's whole newspaper. Agreed on TSN (which existed long before Turner and cable).

The end of an era. I used to read them religiously: So Martha Stewart was the last female to grace the swimsuit edition.
There's something fitting about that . . .
