I wonder which part specifically was considered by some as unethical. Was it the method of being fired? Was it just the fact that he got replaced?
I'd like our team to handle things to right way for sake of reputation to bring players and coaches to us in the future.
I agree that it was probably a good move. Hard to be dissapointed with such a successful manager.
its not any different than Renteria and likely any number of hiring/firings of managers throughout the years. I feel bad for Ross and like everyone on the 2016 team will look upon him with a fond memory and well wishes. I did find some of his in game moves and lineups to be head scratchers at times, I think just as players need to learn to be play at that level managers need to learn to manage at major league level. I hope this means the Cubs are ready to take a big step to the next level and wanted someone who has already mastered their craft rather than someone learning on the job to guide them

Ross was also given the "he's our guy" presser, by both Jed and Tom. I think it was the right thing to do, adding Counsell, and on the same hand I can see why people could feel it was unethical. That being said, so much shit happens in baseball, I don't care how others feel or honestly how Ross feels. The ultimate goal should be to make your team the best possible, legally LOL I can feel bad for Rossy and still really like this move.

Sudden firings of MLB managers at the end of a season are not unusual at all. They realize it is part of the job. And amazingly, they are often soon hired by another team.
Ross will be paid his contracted $4 million for the 2024 season without having to do any work. That hardly puts him in the camp of people to be most pitied.
Actually, the Counsell deal may boost the salaries of all newly hired managers including Ross at his next post. Or he may choose to go back into broadcasting.
I thank Ross for his service to the Cubs and wish him the best wherever he chooses to go.

per Ross “There was a lot of people who worked really hard alongside me. … I am really thankful for the four years I got, coming from zero coaching experience to getting the chance to manage such a great organization that has impacted my life in a great way. There’s great people there. I really don’t have a whole lot negative to say, to be honest. I get mad from time to time but I have a lot to be thankful for.”

I like Ross as a person but always questioned hiring him as the manager. It signaled to me that the Cubs were rebuilding, whether they came right out and said it or not. You don't give a guy with zero managing experience the reins to a team you expect to compete. The Cubs did him a favor by putting him right at the top and I think he knows it. I wouldn't be surprised if this was discussed with him and part of the plan all along. Rossy, we love you and are going to help you jump start your managing career. But understand when things start to come together and another option becomes available, we will move on and wish you the best. I can see that type of conversation happening 4 years ago.

Padres today made Mike Shildt their field manager. All MLB teams now have managers.
What's left for Ross? Broadcasting? A year of paid loafing?

And amazingly so, I always somewhat liked Shildt (as much as a Cub fan can like a Cards mgr. that is) so I'm ok with that too.

Eight MLB teams hired new managers after this season. As far as I am aware, none offered a hint of interest in Ross as a manager. Perhaps the Cub front office does not deserve criticism for replacing him with what they believe is a stronger choice.

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone criticize the move thinking Counsell isn’t a superior manager than Ross. Rather, some have criticized the way the Cubs sought out and hired Counsell while Ross was still under contract for another year. I disagree with that take, it’s a business and Ross isn’t being done dirty, he’s getting paid. But that’s the opinion of some it seems.

Teams had already hired or were nearing decisions when that took place & that didn’t help him. I think he’ll manage again but probably after he takes a bench coach roll but that’s just a gut feeling.

Rather, some have criticized the way the Cubs sought out and hired Counsell while Ross was still under contract for another year. I disagree with that take, it’s a business and Ross isn’t being done dirty, he’s getting paid. But that’s the opinion of some it seems. Indeed, it appeared awkward. But that can occur when there is a sudden flurry of decisions to be made at the end of the season. The Cub front office would’ve been aware that Counsell would become a free agent unless extended by the Brewers. They may have assumed that his long-time nearby rivals would be his last choice. So, they expected Ross to be their 2024 manager and gave him the standard end-of-season pat on the back. Instead, for several reasons the Cubs were Counsell’s first choice. This was apparently learned after very brief discussions. A fat contract cemented the deal. Meanwhile, Ross can keep his $4 million for 2024 without having to do any work. It seems more than a fair price for an awkward slap in the face. I understand those who feel otherwise, nevertheless I appreciate the circumstances that led to the decision and salute the front office. Naturally, I wish Ross the best.
