Not sure there's an opening or room with lefties Hughes, Smyly maybe, and Little on the 40. Iowa also has lefties as backups. I imagine if they do sign or trade for another starter then Smyly is likely traded if they can find a taker. He's a decent rotation go to option plug in to have around if somebody gets hurt , but I don't think they want to pay him 8.5 million to pitch out of the pen. Hughes , can't count on him for anything until he proves he can stay off the IL . Little has a chance to be the main man late inning lefty though. Smyly was really good out of the pen for the Cubs last year. If he puts up numbers this year like he did last year out of the pen, 8.5 wont be bad. Hughes pitched hurt last year instead of getting fixed as Hoyer only had one lefty pen arm on the 40. IMO, teams need at least 2 lefties in the pen. Little should be great. He's going to be fun to watch next year. I don't think the Cubs bullpen is all that bad.

Kershaw has Had Shoulder Surgery, won’t be ready for start of 2024 season I wonder if he hangs it up.
If not, I wonder how low the Dodgers are gonna go with his deal this time. If they are hoping to land ohtani, its gonna cost. Kershaw wont see a 20m 1 yr this time.

They’d most likely have to buy down Smyly’s salary to deal him so maybe they can justify a 4 mil lefty reliever that is really pretty good. I doubt they like Chafin’s numbers much at all from this year so may just pass.

Ohtani has been extended the Qualifying offer by the Angels.
Same with the Cubs and Bellinger.
Padres extend QO to Snell and Hader
Sonny Grey from the Twins
Matt Chapman from the Blue Jays
And Aaron Nola from the Phillies
Total of 7 players have received the QO.
Diamondbacks extend Torey Luvello through 26

Ohtani has been extended the Qualifying offer by the Angels. Same with the Cubs and Bellinger. Padres extend QO to Snell and Hader Sonny Grey from the Twins Matt Chapman from the Blue Jays And Aaron Nola from the Phillies Total of 7 players have received the QO. Diamondbacks extend Torey Luvello through 26 The only ones I’d be comfortable with parting a draft pick for from that list would be Ohtani and Hader. Bellinger wouldn’t cost us one so that’s highly desirable. I don’t think anyone else from that list is worth it. Bonus though, one of the top two free agents that would fill a massive need for us is available without draft pick compensation! Hey, he also wouldn’t cost a posting fee! Bow wow, sign Yamamoto. Let’s talk about Ohtani for a moment. It’s easy to think he might pitch again, and he very well might. We’ve seen it for years, the guy is a workhorse. Whether as a starting pitcher or bullpen arm, his two way status is still extremely desirable. But what if he doesn’t pitch again? You know what he still is? A tremendous hitter and athlete. The Cubs have Happ and Suzuki each locked up for three more seasons. There’s no reason that Ohtani needs to be considered as a worst case massively overpaid DH, for I bet he could absolutely play a serviceable corner outfield if it came to that. Three years from now when we likely say goodbye to at least one of Happ or Suzuki, Ohtani can offer that flexibility. Whoever signs him isn’t paying him as purely a DH. They will be paying him as a perennial MVP candidate and possible above average fielder at any point during his career. He’s only 29, the guy can have a ton left in the tank. We haven’t talked about him much since his surgery but I would still love it for the Cubs to outbid the market for him. He is the biggest and meanest bat available and is a gifted enough athlete that he could well surprise everyone with where his career takes him from here. And most importantly… IT’S NOT MY MONEY. Any free agent carries risk, but when that free agent has been as dominant in the sport for as long as Ohtani has you are going to get an excellent ball player regardless. Whether you are a business man, a baseball owner, or both, Ohtani makes a ton of sense. I’d love for the Cubs to secure at least one major building block this off-season, whether that be Ohtani, Yamamoto, or Soto. You’ve already shook the baseball world with Counsell, a great game manager and someone reportedly every player respects. You just had a 10 win improvement year over year. Great free agents should be looking at the Cubs and thinking “hey, that’s a place I want to be.” It’s up to Tom and the front office to make it happen.

Few rumors around Ross.... he wants to stay in MLB. Some people are saying Yankees would be interested in adding him as a bench coach. Padres are "considering" adding him to their coaching search.
