PCA lands at #7 on MLB Pipeline top OF prospects The Top 10 (ETA) 1. Corbin Carroll, D-backs (2023) 2. Jordan Walker, Cardinals (2023) 3. Jackson Chourio, Brewers (2024) 4. Druw Jones, D-backs (2026) 5. James Wood, Nationals (2025) 6. Zac Veen, Rockies (2024) 7. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Cubs (2024) 8. Sal Frelick, Brewers (2023) 9. Robert Hassell III, Nationals (2024) 10. Colton Cowser, Orioles (2023) That's further than I thought he'd be. Wood jumped him from last years overall rankings. This may push PCA out of the top 20.

I didn't think he'd be inside the top 20 yet, more in the 20-25 since he's only in A ball . Wood only played 50 games last season , but his numbers were awesome 10 homers 45 rbi's .337 avg .453 OBP ...Not a typo .601 sg and a 1.054 OPS . So I could see him jumping PCA , he's going to be a beast of a hitter

www.bleachernation.com/cubs/2023/01/26/cubs-prospect-notes-alcantaras-big-year-ahead-caution-on-wicks-and-triantos-offensive-system-slaughter-hodge-more/Good article from talent evaluators on some of the Cubs prospects. Jordan Wicks - They are not really high on him due to his changeup got hit pretty hard against advance hitters and view him as backend starter now, but something they are not aware of is Wicks traded results for Development as he he added two new pitches mid season and was tinkering with them which caused to get hit hard in a few outings. He is going to be interesting to watch in 2023. Triantos - big concerns on his defense that he will not able to handle 3B/2B (does not move well) and will need to move to first and might fall in the trap of a player who it a bat first who does not hit enough to play 1B/DH in the majors. Alcantara - High praises like usual, they expect a big breakout season Wesneski/Palencia - got some high praises from Baseball Propsectus, Wesneski just missed the top 100 and they can see Palencia moving into the top 100 at some point.

Thanks for sharing. It was a good read, and while the dose of pessimism for some of our guys doesn’t paint the entire picture, it is a sobering reminder for everyone that prospects really are just prospects until proven otherwise. Hype and performance in the minors is exciting but we see it ALL the time where guys struggle transitioning that success into the bigs. Of course, they still need opportunities to prove it one way or the other (cough, Mervis, cough).

MLB top 100 is out. Just like every other list, our magic number seems to be three:
28. PCA 87. Alcantara 92. Davis
I’m really surprised Davis is making any of these lists right now, even if he has fallen quite considerably. There must be some real belief in his tools, because I would have imagined there’d be far better competition for the tail end of the list to bump him off. A full lost season of development and legitimate concerns about injuries and his health.
On the opposite shoe, I wish Mervis got more recognition. It would have made for good fun if he could have cracked another list so he’d potentially qualify for the prospect eligibility changes if he had a good rookie season.

No surprises, but good to see Davis still on the list, he only felll because of the back injury and if that is now truly behind him then He should have a big year and finally make it the majors by June or July. With Mervis, he was never hyped and typically it is tough for 1B/DH type hitter to make the top 100 in the first place. If he keep doing what he has been doing then he idk never make any top 100 because he will not qualify as a prospect anymore. Overall, I was expecting more to make the top 100 but they got a bunch of prospects that can easily land on these list by mid-season in the likes of Hernandez, Horton, Ferris, Cassie, Ballesteros and others I am missing.

Wicks is getting some hype recently, love to see it. With all the Alcántara love of late I’ve been wondering what’s happened with Hernandez and what’s been causing Alcántara to rise but not Hernandez. And then last but not least, I’m not surprised to see Brennen fall off here. Just too much uncertainty at the moment. He can easily fall back into favor around the league if he can just stay on the field. Saw a clip of him already bopping home runs in what I’m guessing was Mesa. Make it happen, kid.

Hernandez has not even played in low A yet, so although he was hyped when he signed since these guys don't see atleast A ball numbers they tend to forget about guys. I'd imagine he starts the season in Myrtle Beach and will start getting attention again.

Hernandez struggled a bit in ACL last year too which is a little concerning but looked great in the instruction camp the Cubs had in the fall. I can see him skyrocket in the list if he comes out strong in Myrtle beach, people just need to see what the FO see in him.

Good post on Twitter about the Cubs farm and player development. It is honest opinion.
Farm system rankings deserve even less ire than individual prospect rankings, and that’s saying something. (That said, I don’t think the Cubs have a top 5 system yet either. And no, I don’t think that fact serves as a referendum on the last 25 months.) 🧵 7:13 AM · Feb 3, 2023 · 34.3K Views 4 Retweets 4 Quote Tweets 66 Likes Cubs Prospects - Bryan Smith @cubprospects · 4h Replying to @cubprospects There are empirical reasons for optimism about how Cubs process in player development has changed. Some stats floated around last year, and I’ve verified them anecdotally in conversations inside the org, about (for instance) the Cubs having a massive Stuff+ jump from 2021 to 2022 Cubs Prospects - Bryan Smith @cubprospects · 4h The Cubs investments in technologies, from robot pitching machines to traveling weight rooms to good housing solutions signal a seriousness to top-down player development that is an improvement on the era that came before it. I do really believe that. Cubs Prospects - Bryan Smith @cubprospects · 4h But it’s a results business, and player development results are at best a lagging indicator for the underlying processes … at worst, bad luck happens and you end up with nothing to show for it. This was also a story of the Cubs system in 2022 given the onslaught of injuries. Cubs Prospects - Bryan Smith @cubprospects · 4h And there are still things the Cubs need to do so much better at the org level. International Free Agency has not yielded nearly enough successes. Changes in high performance this winter suggested they found better methods for transitioning weight room work to skill development. Cubs Prospects - Bryan Smith @cubprospects · 4h It is not important to the Cubs to be the top farm system. This almost always happens after sustained losing. The goal instead is for the player development arm to provide a multi-year consistency in producing MLB ready players. To that end: we’ll see. I’m optimistic, but ymmv. Cubs Prospects - Bryan Smith @cubprospects · 4h I would argue we’ve seen undeniable momentum towards achieving that goal. For a sleeper like Javier Assad to come up and succeed, that’s progress. For Scott Effross to be developed into a player yielding a good trade return, that’s progress. Steele and Thompson, Morel and Hughes. Cubs Prospects - Bryan Smith @cubprospects · 4h The biggest thing that happened in 2022 Cubs player dev tho, by quite some margin, was Nico’s graduation into quite above average MLB’er. While I do genuinely believe it’s important to be good on the margins, it’s essential to internally develop really good baseball players. Cubs Prospects - Bryan Smith @cubprospects · 4h And this is the question the farm system rankers are fair to ask: do enough players in the system YET profile to be multi-WAR difference makers? There’s plenty of star potential, but the key for the next 2 seasons is bringing out that potential and getting them to MLB brink. Cubs Prospects - Bryan Smith @cubprospects · 4h And so where we land is a pretty boring place: there’s been progress, and there’s lots of room to go. (Sheesh it took me a lot of words to get only there, huh?) It’s okay and correct to be excited about what to come, it’s okay and correct to demand that there needs to be more.
