I never really liked Brenly as a commentator. I never noticed him being "harder" on Latino players but he always seemed to be talking trash about the organization in general... especially the coaching staff. I felt like he was trying to use his commentary as a way to get another coaching staff.
With that said, I oddly do not have a problem with his statement. Brenly comes from the older generation that didn't really allow player individuality when it came to their uniforms... some teams like the Yankees still do not allow much. Being prior military I understand the aspect of uniformity so I can see a durag getting under Brenly's skin.
People need to realize that not EVERYTHING has racial undertones, as much as they might like them to. I had a football coach that didn't allow bandanas, had nothing to do with race, he was just an "old school" coach that didn't want his players wearing them under their helmets.

Obviously I don't know Brenly personally but I would chalk this up to a bad attempt at a joke that didn't land. Things like saying Aramis Ramirez didn't hustle was true. Soriano being such a bad defensive player that you could throw a dart in the dugout and find someone better, probably also true. His bike chain comments on gold chains players wear, I have thought the same thing myself with NO thought of what color the players skin happens to be. But it is assumed Brenly made those as racist comments and it is coming back to bite him. I don't know if he had racist motives or not. Sometimes he was funny. Sometimes he tried too hard to make the joke land. But assuming things because of skin color and assuming comments are racially motivated are in a similar category. He says stupid things sometimes. That's kind of his schtick. He got under a lot of players skin because he didn't pull any punches with his criticism. I don't recall if his criticism was weighted by skin color. I think I would like to hear from the players he managed before I label him a racist.

I never liked Brenly . But I don't see what he said as being racially insensitive . Is it not a durag ? Was Strohman not wearing one ? They are even sold on Amazon as a durag. So an attempted joke saying it's the same durag that Tom Seaver used to wear is racist how ?

The entire article is aram saying he felt discriminated against with no examples. That brenly went after non white players. Any evidence to back that up? The athletic has gotten to be pretty racial. They were really close to being the better sports news company that we all needed, and now theyve fizzled out. According to Ramírez, the broadcaster said: “I never got a clutch hit, that I was a numbers stacker.” The star added that he felt Brenly’s harsh criticism couldn't be separated from the color of his skin. “He went after Starlin Castro pretty hard, Geovany Soto pretty hard.” Ramírez does not remember Brenly criticizing the white players. He would get on Aram for not hustling , he would get on Soto for being out of shape every other year and he would get on Castro because Castro was an airhead. And I'm sure he did get on white players to , but to think it was about skin color.... I don't know. I don't recall him getting on him for not getting clutch hits........ Aram was a great RBI guy , so that would not make sense. Maybe Aramis is embellishing that instead of saying he would get on me for not hustling.

I love ARAM, but he did have an issue with not hustling. No secret. He had a lifetime accumulated 0.66 clutch rating, so he seems a little better than middle of the road in that regard. Not exactly 2017/2018 Kyle Schwarber. Good thing Schwarbs is white or I'd be in trouble for mentioning his name in a negative context, because apparently that's a thing. Side note- you can get a custom video made by Aram for next to nothing on Cameo. Pretty cool if you know anyone else who's a big fan and may want a happy birthday video or anything. I was honestly thinking about asking him to do a video for this board. Maybe one day. Probably not for this thread.

I’ll never forget him on the air saying that you could throw a dart in the Cubs dugout and find a better defensive left fielder than Alfonso Soriano. Funny because it was true.

The Cub players had a problem with Steve Stone and then a problem with Bob Brenly. I'm sensing a pattern here and it doesn't seem to be a racial issue.

One article pointed out how Brenly harped on Todd Walker's lack of defense also. That's too far back for me to remember though.

I didn't see it either but I am 60 now & don't know much about what offends & what is ok so I try to avoid chiming in on things that could turn out to be insensitive or racist.

Soto DID get out of shape. And Castro...well....plenty of times he had his head up his ass. So.......if the shoe fits?

Brenly is old school, so he might be sitting back during these "sensitivity training" classes thinking about the cigar he's gonna smoke when he gets outta here.
Because he sees the way things are going, he can adapt while thinking that there is something wrong going on. Mental toughness has gone out of the window and a bad joke can't just be left alone any more without some kind of punishment
Everybody sees everything now, so everybody can be a judge...and most of the time the ones who claim to be offended are rewarded.

There were times he did not hustle , but there were also times when Lou pretty much told him when he was having some leg muscle issues that season that he needs him on the field and not the DL , so don't blow out a hammy trying to beat out a ground ball and Lou a couple of times told the media he told him that.

I had no recollection of that. Glad you said it. I also didnt remember that he hit 300+ in 7 different seasons. Kinda funny that he played for 3 different teams but never left the NLC.

Mental toughness has gone out of the window and a bad joke can't just be left alone any more without some kind of punishment Everybody sees everything now, so everybody can be a judge...and most of the time the ones who claim to be offended are rewarded. Ramirez to me always seemed hyper sensitive about being criticized and when people are like that, they tend to make excuses and hide behind barriers... such as race.
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum was Soriano, I remember the media trying to race bait Fonse when Milton Bradley was around and Soriano simply said, "the fans just want you to play good (sic)."
Bryant is another guy that seems to be sensitive about criticism, at least he was last season, the first taste of playing poorly he probably ever had.
I've always held the belief that players should take criticism as complements, it means they are good and we expect more out of them. The reason Brenly never or maybe rarely criticized Theroit or Fontenot was because we didn't expect anything out of them offensively. They were the quintessential "aw shucks look at those little guys up there trying" players. They weren't good, hell, they were barely replacement level. We were happy that they did ANYTHING!
We expected a lot of Soriano, Ramirez, Lee, Castro and Soto. We expected more out of Zambrano than... say... Randy Wells.
Look how much criticism Bryant got, not just last year but in 2019... He was a 4.5 WAR player in 2019 but people were complaining about him not being clutch, complaining about his defense slipping, complaining about him not being the same player.... He has been so good for us fans were complaining about a guy who put up a 900 OPS!

Here you go, Brenly calling out the great Ryan Theriot. Nobody was whiter than him, right?
“What will it take to get these guys to start running hard?” Brenly asked aloud in Denver after Ryan Theriot barely scored ahead of Bradley getting thrown out trying to stretch a single. Brenly also suggested a “cattle prod” might do the trick.
On Ramirez, Brenly called it as he saw it: Cubs broadcaster Bob Brenly questioned his ability to gauge Ramirez’ effort over the weekend, but said he couldn’t assign a percentage to it because no one knows what Ramirez at 100% looks like. That’s why fans like Brenly – no sugarcoating.
