He's been in the Cubs system since being drafted in 2015 and was having a decent season. Jewel and Miesenger have been horrible , time to shuffle through the Iowa roster more to see if they have anything. I didn't realize Rivas is still only 24 , he had a .405 OBP at Iowa this year , and has a career minor league OBP of .393

Rivas was always the plan for an in-house replacement for Rizzo; the hope there is the power comes... His knowledge of the zone has always been there. At least he can run and play a passable corner OF.

Im pretty happy with his obp and other offensive numbers. Glad hes being brought up. Fangraphs shows him being the cubs #59 prospect, which doesnt sound right after seeing his offensive production. Would think he would be lower for sure.

I'm not undesrtanding the DFA of Maples, after all the years invested in him , sure he still has issues 25 walks in 31 innings and he's out of options. But he still managed to have a 2.59 ERA.
It just seems like maybe somebody doesn't like him because he been kicked around so much going up and down through the years when others would have seemed like a better choice to be cut from the roster. Sure he can be difficult to watch with the walks but I feel he was never up long enough or used frequently enough when he was to get a legit chance, and again the walks are a concern , but when you're not giving up hits on top of the walks ........
I guess it was just time , he's not going to be missed, but I always had the fear that as soon as he moves on it's all of a sudden going to click for him.

Seriously -- if someone claims Maples and there is a turnaround, then we have to assess just why he couldn't succeed here and make the appropriate changes in our organization.
I might disagree with you as to whether or not he had enough chances, but like you, I'm not going to miss him.

He had multiple chances, but it never seemed like he had a legit real chance . I know that sounds funny, but in previous seasons he was constantly being called up and seemingly sent back down after a couple appearances. He's have a good game and then a real bad one , and then seemingly no chance to recover from it. This season he had no options left so they had to keep him and there were times were he would not pitch for a week + and this was while he had an ERA in the 1's . His ERA this season at any point never climbed above 2.61 and it was under 2.00 until right near the end of July. Like I said , the walks are frustrating , but they aren't being followed up with hits and runs .

I said back when Carl Edwards was struggling year after year - it was time to move on from him and try out Maples. Now... Maples may have still sucked, but you would have had more time to try and figure that out.
You're seeing the same thing now with Megill and Rodriguez. Try them out, while they still have option years. Maples, Megill, and Rodriguez are pretty much the same pitcher - at least Rodriguez and Megill have option years left. Maples was probably going to be gone in the offseason anyway, either with a non-tender or via a trade. If you take a look at the 40 man roster and guys on the 60 day DL and pending free agents (not sure who all is a free agent, Davies for sure, I think Holder, Brothers, Stewart, all of the non Contreras and Amaya catchers, and Duffy?) ... the 40 man roster for next season is basically already full. If you want the Cubs to sign anyone in free agency, there's going to have to be other cuts.

I know, but the timing seemed strange, why not give him a legit chance the last 2 weeks when getting wins really means nothing other than lowering your draft slot. But then I guess they already feel they've seen years of him and 2 weeks won't change the future. There are plenty of other names that can easily be trimmed and not missed from the 40 man this winter , so I'm not worried about other cuts.

I agree that Maples didn't really get a great shot. But he also never really took advantage of the opportunities he was given. I can't actually recall all of his outings, but it seemed like he always had an outing where at least 1 or 2 pitches missed BADLY.
Now, again, I'm not saying Megill and Rodriguez are any better, but they have options (correct me if I'm wrong?). And they both throw very hard with suspect control.
Currently there are 46 players on the 40 man roster (6 on the 60 day IL) and they all have to come off the injured list in the offseason. I have 9 free agents on the current roster (Brothers, Davies, Holder, Stewart?, Chirinos, Higgins?, Lobaton, Romine, and Duffy) and as I'm thinking of this Higgins may not be a free agent - but he might be easily cut. There's also not a backup catcher on the roster with this list (unless you consider Amaya the backup catcher) so you'll need a roster spot for that.
Trayce Thompson and Nick Martini are probably good candidates to be non-tendered or maybe resigned on a minor league deal. Duffy is someone I'd think there'd be interest in bringing back (I'm kind of wondering if Duffy isn't a better fit to fill the role of Bote - Duffy - if he can play shortstop - is more versatile than Bote, better contact skills but less power, might this signal a Bote trade in the offseason?). You'll have to replace Davies's spot in the rotation as well as decide the makeup of the bullpen, I doubt the bullpen next year looks anything like it does now (Heuer and Wick are safe bets, Effross and Morgan are probably in the next group).
So yea, I do think there's a bit of a roster crunch. Solvable? Absolutely. But there was going to be some roster turn over anyway. And Maples - being that he had no options left - was high on that list.
