well most people don't think he will be back, I don't think the FO is counting on it anymore either. When you have to put lube in somebody elbow it is the last ditch effort. FO is not delusional, so I don't think they are depending or counting on him be back, he is a bonus if he does. Well the Cubs have no other choice than to try. If he can pitch well then great & if not then collect from ins. Either way they don’t sign Kimbrel now. The DFA list will grow now & you never know, maybe someone needs a change & dies well. Its sure happened before. Yep, worth a shot to see if this works or not, they have really nothing to lose now and got the whole month to evaluate the situation. Kimbrel is a long shot anyhow, but if he does sign, it will be after the draft in June. My guess, is the Cubs will be busy at the deadline for late inning arms over the Kimbrel option who is still holding out for a 3 year deal. My thing, is the Cubs FO is not really counting on Morrow anymore, but hoping they can get something out of him, and even if he does come back he will need to be handled with extreme care and likely wont see him in back to back games and other limits like pitch count and etc. So getting a late inning arm they can count on is still going to be top priority.

They're on the hook for him regardless of what happens, doesn't hurt to have hope. At least they're trying something. Even if it has some effect at this point it's a bonus as they would no longer need to keep him healthy for an entire season, just the 2-3 months they might need him. Long shot at best but it doesn't hurt to try.

I do think they have an expectation that he will be available in the 2nd half. He has a huge work load in 2017, so if they think he is healthy again, I don't think they will handle him with kid gloves... especially if it's in the post season. The goal will be pitching back to back games just like before. If he doesn't come back, I can see them making a trade at the deadline if they think they need it, but I don't assume that they will need it. It is quite possible that help will come from their own system.

I think they will have to trade for somebody, Cubs need a shutdown arm which Morrow is when healthy, but I would not feel comfortable with him holding up even if he does return. I think the Cubs are going to look for a shutdown arm regardless of Morrow, I nobody really in the minors that is considered "shutdown" potential right now. They have a lot of good arms that can help this year, but no shutdown options I can see of, but that can change quickly.

Do we try and sign him on a cheap 1 year? Kimbrel? If he accepts then it is no-brainer but I doubt even if it is a one year deal it will be cheap. AAV is going to be the issue with him and if they do get it under, that leaves pretty much no room to make any other improvements at the deadline, which I don't know if the FO wants to be in that situation.

I don't recall many pen arms who have been good for as long as he has for the Cubs. But they can't look at Strop as being THE guy they are going to look to close most of their games and expect to win a championship. And going by their history of sacrificing a lot of young talent Torres , Soler to get "shutdown" type pen arms I know they will end up doing something. What it is , I don't know. But they can't keep hoping Morrow will be the answer.

Well by the time he signs it's probably going to be after the draft when the comp for signing him is no longer an issue and if it's a deal just for the rest of the season then AAV really is not an issue and you would pretty much have to look at him as your deadline move , because after being out this long without pitching in games, he's probably not going to be sharp until around deadline time. I would throw whatever is left in the budget for this season at him even if it's an overpay for the months he'd be here and if he's not open to a deal for just the rest of the season then of course stay away.

How does the AAV work in a mid season signing? Lets say he signs for $8 Million for the reason of the season, will it only effect $8 million towards the AAV or will it have to be a prorated one year deal if that makes any sense? Right now the Cubs only needs is a big arm for the pen, everything thing else is fine and plenty of depth. If that stays the same they you can just throw what you have left at Kimbrel if he accepts a one year deal to finish the season. Also Kimbrel is pretty much a lock to not sign until after the draft to create a better market unless some desperate team comes along which I don't see happening.

I don't think it would have to be prorated out , because they are not actually paying that. It would make sense to just charge them with what they are paying.

Signing Kimbrel would be nice around June 10 but it really sounds like he is still going to try for the 3 year deal so he may just hold out until he gets it. This might be the time to package an OK prospect or two & trade for the Rangers Leclerc because he is essentially useless to them at this point & a perfect change of scenery type guy. He is basically the 2018 version of Chatwood right now but last year in 59 games had a 0.85 WHIP for a really bad team so the talent is there AND he is locked up for 3 more years on the cheap with (2) club options. If they can't deal for him maybe try for the Giants Smith in a deal.

Rangers just removed him from the closer role today and said he'll be used in low leverage situations for now. I'd maybe ask Daniels if he wants CJ back for him .

I'm torn with CJ just because we KNOW what he can do but if he can never get his head right then he may never do anything again.

Why give Morrow any more money? At this point it'd be like paying Tulo to be your backup SS. I really feel for guys like Morrow, Tulo, Pollock, dudes who just cannot stay on the field. One day, baseball will figure it out when it comes to prehabilitation work, much like the NFL, Soccer, Basketball, you have to train all those small muscle fibers, strengthen you ligaments, limber your joints, train to make your bones denser. Of course, it's easier said than done when you look at baseballs work load, games everyday, small roster sizes etc.

Morrow to 60 day - Stick a fork. Why is that? The timeline with the injection was nothing for 2-3 weeks & then 5 to 6 weeks to build up arm strength which is every bit of 60 days if not a week more which if everything went well could be an early to mid July return. I have no idea if this will work or not but it sure would be great if it did..
