Bad for baseball. I mean, reason #1 why you at least entertain offers before the deadline.

If he has surgery can he still bat next year but not pitch. Or is he done for 6-12 months and can’t do either. Does anyone sign him.

Such a bummer. Changes the landscape of baseball for perhaps the next 5-10 years. Could be interesting.

Bryce Harper had Tommy John in November 2022 and came back to play in May of this year, obviously playing DH. I don't know if it would be different for a pitcher, but in theory you could have his bat for all but 1 month of next season, but not his arm. That gets into how valuable is just his bat?
I think this changes the market for him to maybe something more like a 1-2 year deal right now, then prove it later. It does open the door for a team to take a major gamble on a long term deal that others perhaps wouldn't. Maybe some team that's desperate that wouldn't be in the market otherwise takes a swing at 5-8 years. Who knows.

WOW , sad news and it changes the entire off season and his free agency probably takes a huge hit.

It's terrible news that I was hoping was a false click bait headline when it popped up when I went online this morning but this changes the entire upcoming off season .
One positive that might come out of this for us Cubs fans , it might now increase the chances of signing Bellinger .
I'm almost certain the Cubs were going to go after Ohtani and go hard , ( not be able to sign him though ) and I thought that in itself might affect the way they go after Bellinger because I did not see them thinking they would be able to sign both, so he would maybe have been the second thought and then when Ohtani signed with another team they'd have to hope Belli is still out there. Now I think they can just focus on him from the get go and get a deal done.
So this is bad for baseball , but it could be good for the Cubs.

I wonder if Ohtani gives up on the pitching side and concentrates on the hitting. Is he still a 300M/10y value. He is only 29.

Can a DH come in to pitch and remain as the DH after facing 3 batters

Can a DH come in to pitch and remain as the DH after facing 3 batters Ohtani the closer. 4-5 plate appearances from a .900+ OPS bat, a then steps in as the closer to slam the door shut.

Assuming he has another Tommy John surgery... and really even if he doesn't... I think there's a greater than 0 percent chance that Ohtani accepts the qualifying offer this year.
If he has a second Tommy John surgery, then he's going to be half the player he typically is next year. If he doesn't there may still be lingering questions about his ability to pitch.
By taking the qualifying offer this offseason he opens himself up to all teams in the 2024/2025 offseason. I just think teams might be a little apprehensive about giving him a huge contract given the news on his elbow. 2024 might be a good season for him to "waste" while insuring that he never gets another qualifying offering attached to him.
I'm not saying it's likely he accepts the qualifying offer, but there are reasons to understand why he might do that.

Seems like Anaheim is a curse for injuries.

Ohtani’s two games at the plate since he was pulled with the UCL tear:
3-for-5, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 5 BB (2 intentional), 0 K, 2 SB
Even if the guy doesn’t end up pitching next season, as long as he is cleared to hit he’s still a menace, maybe the best bat in the game. Depending how things shake out for him I would still welcome him with beyond wide open arms to the Cubs.
