This is why this guy is labeled a winner.
Apparently he had been lobbying Jed not to sell and made a pretty solid point.
Yet, Hoyer offered Cubs veteran leader Dansby Swanson, as well as manager David Ross, something he failed to provide in past seasons — time. And with that time, Swanson and Co. flipped the script, keeping a consistent dialogue with Hoyer and the front office, as well.
“My thing was, you can’t just turn it on and off, when you want to win,” Swanson said, per The Athletic. “If we want to be good, the expectation needs to be that we’re going to win. Just because it’s not going purely as planned this year, you get to a deadline, (you can’t just say) we’re done with the year.”
As Swanson expressed, how is any team supposed to build momentum year over year if the front office trades away any and all assets each July?
“The message still has to be to everyone that the expectation is this,” Swanson continued. “I just kind of said now is a real important moment in culture setting. If we want to be winners here, we can’t just say, ‘All right, we’re going to turn our winner mindset on next year when we feel like we have everything right.’ No. The winning mindset stays at all times.”
Eventually, Hoyer bought in because of the results on the field. But Chicago had to make him believe.

Dansby is simply awesome and the correct choice this past offseason. This is Hoyer best move by a mile since taking over.
He has become the leader on this team.

His best player move , I think hiring Hawkins was probably the best move , the pitching they drafted and the success they are already having with last years pitching draft class is pretty incredible. But Swanson was the perfect player move for where the team was at and where it wants to go. Horton 3.12 ERA 12.2 K/9 and on his 3rd level this season and crashing the top 20 prospects in all of baseball lists Ferris 3.46 ERA 12.5 K/9 Mule injured Birdsell 2.36 ERA 7.9/K9 Frisch TJ recovery Hull 4.30 ERA 9.2/K9 McGwire 8.10 ERA 9/2/K9 Noland 3.77 ERA 6/2 K/9 McCullough 3.43 ERA 11.5 K/9 Noriega 5.09 ERA 14.1/K9 Rujano 2.34 ERA 12.2 K/9

Could be a classic "pay no attention my 2-for-18 performance the last 7 Days" misdirection.

Dansby's first season in the Cubs has been terrific. Might have to get a jersey one of these days.

Along the same lines of the original post
David Ross held a meeting in June to inspire his players after the Chicago Cubs fell 10 games under .500 and 7 1/2 games back in the NL Central, according to the Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
The Cubs had just been swept by the Los Angeles Angels and were in San Francisco preparing for a new series against the Giants.
Before gathering the team, Ross spoke separately with Cubs catcher Yan Gomes and shortstop Dansby Swanson, who had both been on World Series-winning teams that got off to bad starts in the regular season.
During the team powwow, Gomes and Swanson addressed their teammates, sharing their experiences and providing insight into what it would take to turn things around.
"We took a lot of pride this year in bringing the team together, having team gatherings, spending time together in spring training," Gomes said. "A lot of that was, 'Let's not let that go to waste. We're putting a lot of effort into this. Let's put it on the field as well.'"
According to Rosenthal, Ross's overarching message to the team was that there was plenty of time for the Cubs to get back into the race.
Whatever was said in that meeting certainly inspired confidence, as the Cubs immediately went on an 11-2 run and are now currently three games over .500 and 1/2 a game back in the wild card race. They're just 2 1/2 games back of the first place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central Division.

Dansby's first season in the Cubs has been terrific. Might have to get a jersey one of these days. I was never a jersey guy but I used to get the t-shirt type jerseys with the players name and number on it every time we went back home every year or every other year or so to the Chicago area to visit my parents but I stopped doing that shit because it seems like I developed a not so positive trend . Garciapara Prior Wood D Lee The season I would buy one in , the player would end up spending most of it on the disabled list.

Allllmost pulled the triggr on a javy jersey in 2016, but thought he was possibly going to get traded at the time.

This is not a knock on Dansby Swanson.... but it's interesting how fans will fall in love with a 115 wRC+ player who's in his prime (his best year being 116).

Because there are other attributes a player carries than just wRC+. Defensively he’s a game changer. His leadership skills are well advertised. That coupled with him being ~15% better offensively than the average MLB shortstop gives you someone we are giddy over. That’s really all it is. Offense isn’t everything, but even there he’s above average for the position he plays. Ian Happ is currently a 112 wRC+ yet I don’t see anyone who is praising what he’s brought to the team this year. So interesting? Perhaps. But only if you don’t look at anything other than his wRC+ I suppose.

Not really because most fans just like to watch a player play and don't go by one single subjective/ projected stat to judge a guy. wRC+ is nice to look at and a decent contrived new age stat that can help give a perspective on a player , but it doesn't factor in so many things about a player , so what is interesting is how some people can only look at that and make their assesment of the player. It has nothing to do with thier personality. nothing to do with how hard they play the game nothing to do with their instincts for the game nothing to do with so many things.
