Bummer, I was hoping Kawa was going to make the team or atleast end up in AAA. They do mention that they hope to retain all three on new minor league deals but Parra will probably get a better opportunity somewhere else.

I don't know why, but for some reason I feel like going fishing.

Cubs are trying to get all 3 back to new deals. Pretty sure Victorino and Parra will move on, but good chance Kawasaki could return.

Victorino and Parra seem to have no interest in playing in the minors, so I would have to assume that is why they were released. Hopefully Kawasaki can rework a deal, although somewhat surprising as I thought he had a good shot to make the team. Does this mean Baez and Soler are in?

They must feel confident about Baez status for opening day, but they also could put Baez on the DL and give the last roster spot to Matt Szczur.

I don't think there was ever a doubt about Baez and Soler. The only doubt was Baez thumb putting him on the DL. The way Joe has been talking there was no chance Baez wasn't going to not be on the 25 man unless he was hurt. He mentioned the plans for who gets the 25th spot revolve around Baez health. From the cuts it looks like his thumb is going to be ok and LaStella makes the team and they will go with that 13th pitcher.

I do wonder how much playing time Baez will get. Personally, I prefer his defence at 2nd to Zobrist's, but Zobrist is more consistent at the plate.

I'm not sure how many starts he'll get , I can't see Joe finding time for him for more than 2 starts a week at different positions............if he's hitting. But he'll probably get into most games late as a pinch hitter and then stay in and maybe pick up a 2nd at bat.

Would be nice depth to have, but going to extended Spring Training might be his only choice to keep his career going, teams are not going to stumble over themselves to grab a often injured outfielder who is in the twighlight of his career.

True, and he did know coming in that his chances were very slim here and the Cubs gave him an opportunity to get out of his deal after Fowler signed to find a team he had a better chance with and he chose to stay. They will probably re-sign him and he'll end up with an opt out date where he has to be called up by a certain date or he can choose to be released.

That seems to be the way this is all heading and that would be a good thing for all involved.

Agreed, Victorino has to prove he can still play, this might be his only opertunity to do so.

We will see what Victorino does, really it was just a depth move anyways, so not a huge loss if he decides to move on. Really, his only two realistic options are go to extended Spring Training and see if he can make the team or retire.

It's possible he could catch on with another team, but his best bet is to continue with the Cubs and then see what his options are at that point.

I wonder sometimes if Joe is truly sold on Baez or if some of his talk is intended to help boost Javy's confidence... Defensively he's right there... if he could cut out his occasional non-chalantness (is that a word?) he'd be top drawer. I'm not convinced he's there though in the batter's box. He has swagger but that doesn't always equate to confidence....
That said - I think the only way he'll improve is to play at the MLB level... in some regards it's too bad for him that the Cubs are as good as they are... if he fails it'll matter more... flip side to that is others can be there to carry him so it's defiantly not all on him....
I'm anxious to see how far he'll progress this summer... I'm sure I'm not alone....

I agree Willy that the only way for Baez to progress is to play at the MLB level and not only that, but start regularly. I really don't think being a bench player is what is best for him at this point of career. Although, I do believe Maddon is fantastic at managing young players and will do the best he can with him. It just seems with the signings of Heyward, Zobrist and Fowler that it limits players like Soler and Baez. It will be interesting to see how much playing time Zobrist, Soler, Fowler and Baez get this season. Maybe Maddon goes on match ups and they all split time fairly evenly.

Tough to say, it is hard to get sold on Baez and I think the FO is not totally sold on Baez either, he still has a lot of work to do, but he is improving but not at the point where they feel comfortable being a everyday starter on a World Series caliper team.
Eventually I see him being traded down the road might even be this year.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that even though Baez was hyped as the next potential 30/30 guy in our system, he just recently had his swing/leg kick adjusted. With the 4-year deal given to Ben Zobrist (who may end up in LF vs. LHP if Baez can show consistency in that department and Soler is traded for pitching, etc.), the timeline of Gleyber Torres becomes increasingly important to Baez.
Right now, Baez is our #1 backup at SS and 2B, but La Stella's approach at the plate may have put him ahead (.819 OPS vs. RHP in 9 PA at ST, 1.200 OPS vs. LHP in 5 PA-2 hits, both doubles).
