Just because MLBtraderumors is predicting it doesn’t make it right. They are wrong in many of their predictions every year. But I think it does highlight something I’ve been saying about Bellinger for awhile: for those who believe his 2023 performance was entirely legit and have no concerns about him matching it going forward, why are there so many people bowing out at the 200m marker? We’d be talking about a perennial top 5 MVP and gold glove candidate in centerfield of all places, and he’s only 28 and swings from the left side. That is HUGE asset in any team in the league. Most of the comments I’ve seen are people getting antsy around 200m. Considering the above, it seems there are concerns over his ability to maintain that 2023 pace. If not and you simply thing that’s way too many years or dollars, I’d direct you towards the market realities. Look at the contracts that were handed out last year in a much deeper crop of free agent hitters. In this market you have two well above average bar options available: Ohtani and Bellinger. That’s it. And most teams will never be real players for Ohtani in the first place. 12/264 is more than I predicted for Bellinger, but it wouldn’t shock me at all if some team goes there. Revenue is up, attendance and viewership is up. Every CBT negotiation will continue to lead to higher and higher limits. Eventually the market will go through a correction, it always does. That won’t happen this off-season where the options are so few. Supply and demand.

Setting the guys at the top aside for a moment, all of Imanaga, Hoskins, Matsui, Turner, and Hendricks are of interest to me. None of those guys have QO compensation attached and could make for good fits.

A lot of people are balking at the Bellinger 12 years and $264M, but that's only $22M a year. I think I would make this deal.
Bellinger would be 29 in July of next year. 12 years would have him playing through age 41. How many productive years do you think you can get out of him? 10? 9?
If you basically consider it a 9 year contract and then just eat the last 3 years (which if you can trade or unload him, you probably wouldn't have to eat 100% of those 3 years - a significant chunk maybe, but not the full $22M), that's $29.33M a year. I don't think that's terrible. But for CBT it would only be a $22M hit.

The Cubs do not need average or slightly above average talent. Broken record but Yamamoto along with the SD unicorn should be the top targets. Turner can't play 3b anymore. Would rather they throw Morel out there in hopes he can improve while maintaining his offense and improving his pitch recognition. Could do worse than Hoskins, think he will be their 2nd biggest free agent contract. The number of years he is likely seeking aligns with Hoyer's view on free agency.

I don't see the Cubs really doing anything - except for maybe signing Bellinger, if that can happen - until after Yamamoto is decided, one way or another.
When Stroman opted out and with Counsell coming in, I think everything hinges on Yamamoto.
I don't really see a lot of movement with any of the other free agents until after Yamamoto signs some where. And I wouldn't expect anything from Yamamoto until around Christmas.

Good point , a 22 AAV doesn't put a huge chunk in your luxury tax and at some point the Cubs will probably have to shift to longer and lower AAV's than the short and high ones they have been making.

Once he is officially posted he only has 45 days to sign , so atleast we know it won't be too long . I'm sure teams are going to be aggressive and I'm sure he has somewhat of an idea on where he'd be willing to play.

A tasty pasty from the MLB site: 2. Cody Bellinger, CF, Cubs Perhaps no player boosted -- or complicated -- his free agent stock more with his 2023 performance. When Bellinger debuted in 2017 for the Dodgers as MLB Pipeline’s No. 13 prospect, he hit the ground running by winning the NL Rookie of the Year Award with 39 home runs and a 143 OPS+. Two years later in 2019, Bellinger won NL MVP with a monstrous 8.6 bWAR season and 47 home runs. Things took an odd turn after that. Bellinger underperformed in 2020 (112 OPS+) and underwent surgery for a dislocated right shoulder after the season. He returned the next two seasons in a diminished capacity, posting a 66 OPS+ and -0.5 WAR from 2021-22. After the Dodgers non-tendered Bellinger in November 2022, the Cubs signed him to a one-year, $17.5 million deal. Bellinger bounced back with the Cubs in 2023, producing 4.4 WAR and a 133 OPS+. His batted ball numbers suggest he might have overperformed -- his .331 expected wOBA was much lower than his .370 wOBA -- but he also shaved his strikeout rate by a whopping 11.7%. His next team will have to evaluate his complicated career arc and decide which version of Bellinger will show up going forward. What exactly is it about this guy that screams 12 years? If he'd have had a few more homers last season would he have been worth a 15 year deal?
What if he'd have stayed healthy the entire season? Maybe a 20 year deal for that?
He's a 5-6 year deal candidate IMO.

Had he not missed a month with the injury he likely would have had well over 100 rbi's and been in the talk for getting MVP votes, not saying he'd win or come close, but he would get some mentions. And it's fairly clear Boras wasn't talking shit when he said his down years were because of the shoulder injury , and a healthy Bellinger can be one of the better players in the league. 12 years , that's a shocker for me , I was figuring he'd be seeking 9-10 which I thought would be too much and end up signing for 6-7.

1 down, 49 to go!
It feels good to finally have something happened and not just speculative rumors. Hopefully this is a good sign for the week to come as we inch closer towards the winter meetings. Next big one perhaps is Yamamoto officially getting posted.
Has Imanaga been posted yet? I don’t think I’ve seen anything official.

Imanaga according to Heyman and others a couple weeks ago was supposed to be posted last Monday , but I don't think he has been yet unless I missed it too ?
