Happy Father's day! now on to today's baseball history
June 20th
1881 A new team is formed in Cincinnati after the demise of the previous Cincinnati Reds team. This new club will succeed and become the modern-day Cincinnati Reds.
1894 Denny Lyons scores the winning run in the 9th inning to lead Pittsburgh to a 7 – 6 win over Washington. Lyons gets into scoring position by running from first base to third base – across the pitcher’s mound – on a fielder’s choice. The umpire does not see Lyons’s transgression, a common one in the 1890s.
1912 In a doubleheader at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh’s Owen Wilson hits two triples in the opener, including one in the 10th with a man on, then hits another in the nitecap. It’s his fifth straight game with a three-bagger. Wilson will hit an incredible 36 triples this season, a major league record.
1901 John W. Taylor goes the distance but takes the loss when the Beaneaters defeat the Orphans at Boston's South End Grounds. The right-hander's start begins a remarkable streak of 187 consecutive complete games that end in August of 1906.
1948 Ralph Kiner hits home runs every Sunday for eight successive weeks in May and June. For the year he will hit 17 round trippers in 38 Sunday games.
1950 Joe DiMaggio collects his 2,000th career hit.
1977 Red Sox set a major league record when the team hits their twenty-second home run in the past six games.
2004 On Father's Day with his dad in attendance. Ken Griffey, Jr. blasts a sixth-inning HR at Busch Stadium for his 500th career home run. The Reds' center fielder becomes the twentieth major leaguer and the sixth youngest to reach the milestone.
2009 Two major league games end on walk-off wild pitches in extra innings on the same day. Jason Jennings' errant throw allows Nate Schierholtz to score the winning run for the Giants with two outs in the 11th inning to beat Texas, 2-1, and Andres Blanco comes home on Kerry Wood's miscue, giving the Cubs a 6-5 victory over the Indians in 13 innings.

1901 Right-hander Harley ‘Doc’ Parker of the Reds gives up 21 runs and 26 hits to Brooklyn in his first start of the season – and major league farewell appearance. The 26 hits is a post-1900 record, tied by Al Travers in 1912, and by the A’s Hod Lisenbee in 1936. The 21 runs allowed is a National League mark. Harley also faces a record 55 batters in the game. Led by Willie Keeler’s five hits, including a home run and double, the Superbas win, 21 – 3.
1907 The Cubs top the Cardinals, 2 – 0, as C Johnny Kling throws out all four would-be St. Louis base stealers. Three-Finger Brown wins his 10th straight game.
1916 Red Sox right-hander Rube Foster tosses a no-hitter against the Highlanders. The no-no is the first one ever thrown in Fenway Park, the team's home since 1912.
1939 The New York Yankees announce Lou Gehrig’s retirement, based on the report that he has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The 36-year-old star will remain with the team as captain.
1952 As a publicity stunt, Harrisburg of the Inter-State League signs a woman player, Eleanor Engle, but she does not get into a game. Female ballplayers are officially banned by minor league President George Trautman shortly after.
1964 Phillies' hurler Jim Bunning becomes the first modern pitcher to toss a no-hitter in both leagues when he throws a perfect game to beat the Mets, 6-0. Gus Triandos also becomes the first catcher to handle a no-hitter in each circuit.

He did complete the game with 8 IP so his manager must have thrown in the towel and made ol' Doc take one for the team. I looked up his stats and he didn't play in the major leagues from 1897 until the 1901 season when he had the lone game. Maybe he should have quit while he was ahead. He is buried in All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines in case anyone wants to pay their respects.

I don't remember it, but I had a lot going on in the mid 70's and coverage wasn't what it is now.

1916 The Indians became the first major league club to field a team with numbered uniforms when they take on Chicago at Cleveland's League Park. However, the use of large numerals on the players' left sleeve and corresponding scorecards last just a few weeks, and, after a brief trial next season, the club abandons the concept.
1944 At the Polo Grounds with over 50,000 fans looking on, the New York major league teams face each other in a six inning three-team game (a team played consecutive innings against the other two teams then sat out an inning) to raise money for war bonds. The charity contest, billed as the Tri-Cornered Baseball Game, ends with the final score of Dodgers 5, Yankees 1, Giants 0.
1960 At Forbes Field, Cubs rookie Ron Santo, making his major league debut, leads Chicago to a sweep of the first-place Pirates. Santo is 3 for 7 and drives in five runs as the Cubs win, 7 – 5 and 7 – 6.
1961 Yogi Berra collects his 2000th career hit.
1962 Earl Wilson of the Boston Red Sox becomes the first black pitcher in American League history to hurl a no-hitter.
1966 The Major League Executive Council decides that both the American League and National League will play 162-game schedules in 1969 and operate two 6-team divisions each
1969 At Wrigley Field, the Cubs defeat the Pirates 7-5. Ron Santo's 2-run home run in the 8th inning ties the game and Jim Hickman's 2-run homer in the 10th is the walk-off winner. Santo, Hickman, Ken Rudolph & Billy Williams all homer for the Cubs.
1970
Frank Robinson hits two grand slams in the same game, helping Baltimore beat the Senators, 12-2. The Oriole outfielder, who accomplishes the feat in consecutive at-bats, is the seventh major leaguer to hit two bases-full homers in one game.

Santo was the hot topic of conversation for my 1960 Babe Ruth League team. Thirty years later I had a long one-on-one conversation with him, in which I learned he wouldn't react well to mention of the year 1969.

1894 For the first time in nearly a month, covering 24 games, Baltimore fails to score at least seven runs.
1911 In the 7th inning at Huntington Avenue Grounds, the A’s Stuffy McInnis steps into the batter’s box to lead off and hits Ed Karger’s warm-up pitch for an inside-the-park home run while the Red Sox are still taking their positions. Boston manager Patsy Donovan protests to umpire Rip Egan, but Egan rejects the protest on the basis of Ban Johnson’s new rule prohibiting warm-up pitches. The A’s win, 7 – 3. Ban Johnson’s time-saving rule, which declares that pitchers must throw as soon as the batter is in the box, is soon withdrawn. no warm up rule was implemented due to concern that some games were taking over two hours to play. (funny that pace of play was issue back then)
1930 46-year-old Philadelphia Athletics pitcher John Quinn becomes the oldest player to hit a home run in major league history.
1938 Jimmie Foxx belts the 400th homer of his career.
1940 To honor the lyricist of Take Me Out to the Ballgame, Jack Norworth Day is celebrated at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Neither Norworth nor his partner Albert Von Tilzer, who wrote the music, had ever seen a game when they created the song in 1908.
1963 Tigers' first baseman Norm Cash plays an entire game without recording a put out in the team's 10-6 loss to the Twins.
1977 Willie McCovey becomes the first major leaguer to hit two homers in the same frame twice in his career when he smashes a solo shot and a grand slam in the Giants' ten-run sixth inning at Riverfront Park. The San Francisco first baseman, who also accomplished the feat in the first week of the 1973 season, home run heroics contributes to the team's 14-9 victory over Cincinnati.
1986 Robby Thompson of the San Francisco Giants sets a major league record when he is caught stealing four times.
1994 The Cubs defeat the Pirates, 2 – 1, as P Randy Myers records his 200th career save. He is only the third lefthander to reach the mark.
2003 the Red Sox establish a major league record by scoring 10 runs before making an out.
2016 Kris Bryant becomes the third major leaguer ever to collect five extra-base hits in one contest, and the first to do so with three home runs and two doubles.

Norm Cash with no putouts at 1B in 63, one day after the SS went a double header without a fielding chance. Apparently not as uncommon as I would have thought. Better chance of no putouts at 1B in todays all or nothing game of K's and HR's. In 1963 that was a feat.

1871 Both Athletic of Philadelphia and the Troy Haymakers score in each inning, with Athletic winning, 49 – 33, the highest-scoring contest in the history of the National Association. The 42 hits made by Athletic (including a 7 for 7 day by John Radcliff and 6 for 8 performances by Al Reach and Levi Meyerle) is also a league record.
1907 Washington Senators steal an American League record 13 bases in a 16-5 win over the New York Highlanders.
1910 Joe Tinker steals home twice, becoming the first major leaguer to accomplish the feat in the same game. The Cubs shortstop's thievery helps Chicago beat the Reds, 11-1.
1916 Cubs catcher Bill Fischer sets a major league record by catching all 27 innings in a doubleheader loss to the Pirates. The second game goes 18 innings before the Pirates win it, 3 – 2. Impressed with Fischer’s durability, the Pirates will acquire the backstop next month.
1957 Ponca City and Greenville (Sooner State League) turn triple plays in successive half innings. Greenville turns theirs in the bottom of the 1st, while Ponca City follows with one in the top half of the 2nd.
1986 Phil Niekro of the Cleveland Indians and Don Sutton of the California Angels become the first 300-game winners to face each other during the 20th century.
2008 The Los Angeles Dodgers win a game without the benefit of a hit when they are thwarted by Angels pitchers Jered Weaver and Jose Arredondo over 8 innings. In the 6th inning, Matt Kemp reaches first base on an error by Weaver, steals second and advances to third on a throwing error by catcher Jeff Mathis, then scores the game’s only run on a sacrifice fly by Blake DeWitt. The last team to win a game without registering a base hit were the Cleveland Indians who beat Boston’s Matt Young under similar circumstances on April 12, 1992. It is the fifth time since 1900 that a major league team has won a game without a hit.
2016 In defeating the Reds, 7 – 2, in 15 innings, the Cubs have to use three different pitchers in left field after they run out of position players. Relievers Travis Wood and Spencer Patton alternate between the mound and the outfield in the 14th, then another reliever, Pedro Strop, plays in left in the 15th as Wood closes out the win. Kris Bryant snaps the tie with an RBI single in the top of the 15th and Javier Baez follows with a grand slam to put the game away

1897 The Chicago Colts (Cubs) of the National League establish the record for most runs scored in a game by one team when they clobber the Louisville Colonels, 36-7.
1909 Walter Johnson gives up a solo homer to Ray Demmitt in the 7th, the first home run he’s allowed since his debut in 1907.
1937 Ripper Collins does not make a putout during the nine-inning game. Although this is just the third occurrence of the rare feat, it is the second time for the Cubs infielder, who also didn’t make a putout playing first for the Cardinals in a game played against the Braves two seasons ago.
1961 Mays becomes 4th player to hit 3 homeruns in a game twice in a season.
1969 Billy Williams breaks the NL record for consecutive games played held previously by Stan Musial (896)
1977 Willie Stargell hits his 400th career.
1990 Dave Stewart and Fernando Valenzuela become first pitchers to throw no-hitters on same day.

Ah a sweet swingin Billy Williams reference. Love everything about that man! Love most of 1969, except the end of the bb season. What a great year otherwise though.
