1888 The first publication of Ernest L. Thayer's poem Casey at the Bat appears in the San Francisco Examiner. 1902 Cardinals pitcher Mike O’Neill hits the first pinch grand slam ever in the majors. 1911 Chicago Cubs slugger Frank Schulte hits a grand slam off Rube Marquard to beat the New York Giants, 8 – 4. Schulte will slam four this season, a record tied by Babe Ruth in 1919 and topped by Ernie Banks’ five in 1955. 1921 Crip Polli strikes out 28 batters in a ten-inning contest against Cushing Academy at Mountaineer Recreation Field in Montpelier, Vermont. The Goddard Seminary student’s performance, highlighted in Ripley’s Believe It or Not, is no fluke as the high schooler will fan 105 batters in a five-game span. 1971 Ken Holtzman no-hits the Reds, 1-0 in Cincy. 1978 The Braves and the Cubs tie a major league record, using 14 hurlers in a single game. Each team uses seven pitchers when Chicago beats Atlanta at Wrigley Field, 8-6. 1987 Three players hit grand slams in the Cubs' 22-7 rout of the Astros at Wrigley Field. Chicago's Keith Moreland and Brian Dayett go deep with the bases loaded, and Billy Hatcher adds one for Houston. 2017 Albert Pujols becomes the ninth major leaguer to hit 600 home runs and the only player to reach the milestone with a grand slam. The last one made me look up the active HR leaders and who might hit 600. I doubt anyone else does it very soon as all the guys close are nearing the end of their playing days. Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton have a shot. Aranado has an outside chance. Longevity, staying healthy and repeating a few of their top years would be key.

My brother was named Casey after that poem...well, I think. I just googled the poem and saw the last line including "no joy in mudville", which is the name of a death cab for cutie song. All song lyrics and riffs seem to get ripped off from somewhere- funny when you stumble upon it.

D-Day - June 6, 1944 My late godfather Charles "Chuck" Brooks, long-time editorial cartoonist for the Birmingham News, was part of the invasion and thereafter always celebrated June 6th as a holiday. All scheduled MLB games were cancelled on D-Day, except for an exhibition game between the Cardinals and a minor league team. RetroSimba: Why the Cardinals played baseball in Delaware on D-Day
