My paternal grandfather Otto was born in Germany on May 1, 1891. He migrated to Chicago in 1912 and quickly became a Cub fan. Grandpa got a TV for his northside Chicago tavern in 1948, so his patrons could watch Cub games. Happy 130th birthday Grandpa.

May 2, 1917 At Weeghman Park, southpaw Hippo Vaughn of Chicago and Reds righty Fred Toney throw no-hitters against one another through the first nine innings. The deadlock is broken in the top of the tenth with a one-out single by Larry Kopf, an error, and an infield hit by Jim Thorpe, and Toney then sets the Cubs down in order to preserve his extra-inning gem.
1923 Senator right-hander Walter Johnson tosses his 100th career shutout when he blanks the Yankees at Griffith Stadium, 3-0. During his 21-year career, the 'Big Train' will establish a major league record, whitewashing the opponents 110 times.
1968 Mets hitter Bud Harrelson becomes the first batter in baseball history to gain a 3-0 ball-strike count advantage from the on-deck circle when umpire Ed Vargo penalizes Phillies reliever John Boozer for going to his mouth inside the 18-foot circle of the mound. Philadelphia manager Gene Mauch, incensed about the ball one call, orders his pitcher to do it again for ball two, and then again for ball three, which promptly gets his right-hander and himself thrown out of the game, a 3-0 loss to New York at Shea Stadium.

May 2nd 1994.
Changing their uniform color from white to blue to snap a losing streak doesn't work for the Cubs when they lose their record 11th consecutive game. Chicago is limited to two hits from John Smiley as the Reds rout the Cubs 9-0.
So things have been worse than they are right now. Keep your chin up Cubs fans 'cause here come the Dodgers.

Hendricks better not lead with his chin against the Dodgers or he will be knocked out in the first

1963 In his only at-bat with the Orioles, Buster Narum goes deep off Cleveland southpaw Don Mossi. In six days, Baltimore options the 22 year-old rookie hurler to Triple-A Rochester, making the right-hander the first pitcher to have more homers than wins in a season.
1966 After previously blanking Boston and Kansas City, Indian right-hander Luis Tiant tosses his third consecutive shutout when he beats the Yankees in the Bronx, 1-0. The 25 year-old 'El Tiante' has yet to surrender a single run this season.
1980 Willie McCovey homers for the final time, a solo shot off Scott Sanderson in the fourth inning of the Giants' 3-2 loss to Montreal at Olympic Stadium. The 42 year-old future Hall of Fame first baseman, who hit the first of his 521 round-trippers in 1959, joins Red Sox legend Ted Williams as the only other major leaguer to homer in four different decades.

May 3rd 1886 With an overflow crowd of 17,231 at West Side Grounds, the umpire rules that any ball hit into the crowd is a ground rule triple. The Chicago Cubs take full advantage and crack 9 triples. 3 are hit by Bill Dahlen and the Cubs crush the St. Louis Browns 16-7.

Ahhh, Don Mossi, original member of the all-ugly baseball card team. But really, not a bad pitcher for a couple years there.

May 4th
1963 Bob Shaw commits five balks to establish a new major league mark. After walking Billy Williams in the third inning, the Braves' right-hander balks three times, allowing a run to score. Cubs win 7-5.
1968 Simon and Garfunkel tune "Mrs. Robinson" debuts on the Billboard's Top 40 survey. The song's lyrics include the memorable question for the Yankees' former center fielder, "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you."
1975 In the team's 8-6 loss to the Giants at Candlestick Park, the Astros' Bob Watson scores the major league's one-millionth run, winning $10,000 and one million Tootsie Rolls provided by the event's sponsor. The Houston first baseman crosses the plate on Milt May's homer just seconds ahead of the Reds' Dave Concepcion to earn the distinction, thanks to a teammate's awareness of the situation from a clubhouse TV, alerting the trotting baserunner to run home at full speed.
2005 The fifth pair of 300-game winners in baseball history face off against each other when Cubs starter Greg Maddux (305) bests Roger Clemens (329) and the Astros at Minute Maid Park, 3-2. The other pair of milestone moundsmen includes Don Sutton vs. Steve Carlton (1987), Don Sutton vs. Phil Niekro (1987), Don Sutton vs. Tom Seaver (1986), and Tim Keefe vs. Jim 'Pud' Galvin (1892).

1904 Cy Young tosses the first perfect game in American League history, defeating Rube Waddell and the Philadelphia A's, 3-0. The Red Sox right-hander's gem is the first perfect game thrown in the majors since the distance between the mound and plate was changed from 45 feet to 60 feet, six inches in 1893.
1955
In his first major league start, Dodger rookie starter Tommy Lasorda ties a record, throwing three wild pitches in the first inning of the team's 4-3 victory over St. Louis at Ebbets Field. During his one inning of work, the future Dodgers' Hall of Fame skipper will be spiked by Wally Moon, covering a play at home plate after uncorking one of his errant pitches.
1962 In just his fourth big league start, Bo Belinsky throws the first hitless game in Angels history and the first one ever tossed at Dodger Stadium, beating the Orioles, 2-0.
