padres are laughing all the way. thought Davies be a bit better than this. I knew he wouldn't put up numbers like Yu, though be not far off, but this is not close at all. wondering if Davies is injured?

I think one of the bigger things with the Darvish trade was getting out from under his contract.
Darvish certainly came along a lot better the last two years than he did in the first year of that contract - but he's also getting older and throwing a ton of pitches, so that contract may not age very well. Plus... this team isn't going to compete until it's dismantled and rebuilt (which should have been done a couple of years ago), so having Darvish didn't really make a lot of sense.
The other aspect is the CBA coming up at the end of the season. I'm expecting some wholesale changes in the next CBA. The Cubs front office has really positioned themselves well for this, because they have very few contracts on the books for next season. A lot of people are upset because Rickett's wouldn't spend money this past offseason, I'll be more upset if he doesn't spend money this upcoming offseason or the next one - after the new Collective Bargaining Agreement is resolved.
Now, did I expect Davies's production to be this bad? No. But Davies's struggles is a harrowing example of what might be coming for Hendricks. Fans on this board have always been up in arms any time Hendricks is not referred to as an ace - and he really has performed very well the past several seasons. But when you don't have velocity on your fastball - then you can't miss with location. When you have someone like Scherzer (or even Arrieta during his heyday) they can win on days when they don't necessarily have their best command or their best stuff, because they can often beat you with just velocity. Hendricks (and Davies) don't have anything to fall back on, so if their command is gone, they're probably going to get lit up that game.
My bigger concern is becoming whether or not if the front office will unload some of these last-year contract players by the trade deadline. Or will they do what they've done the past couple of offseason - either hold out thinking there's a better offer to be had that never comes, or are they so smitten with some of these players that even if they are 33-48 in July, the front office will still be thinking "this offense will come together soon and when it does... watch out!"
I probably would have preferred the front office to move some of these players during this past offseason. I can certainly understand freeing up a lot of money for use after the new CBA, so not being heavy into the free agent market this past offseason made sense. And the offense - and the pitching - have been broken, really even since 2016, so something is going to have to change if you want different results. And at this point it makes sense to just wait for the new CBA.

A fine example of why tribune Ricketts and Ded Jed are inept

If Yu had pitched last night, we would have lost. A loss is a loss. And, he has 1 more win than Davies, who is our worst pitcher.

We all know Darvish is a superior pitcher to Davies, that is no secret.
We were kidding ourselves to believe the drop off would not be that huge, but as fans we overrated the players to start the season because that what fans do, and then reality hits once the season is underway. I did not think Davies was going to be this bad though, but his past track record suggest he will get it figured out and be a solid pitcher fairly soon, if not at least he is not on a long term deal and his contract will be off the books. He was nothing more than a throw-in anyhow in the Darvish trade.

Everyone with a clue understood why it was imperative to reset the luxury tax. Those without a clue don't.
Darvish doesn't matter. Heyward $23M, Bryant $20M, Kimbrel, Rizzo, Baez, Hendricks, Contreras... The spending isn't the problem. It's player performance. Our players. The one's we watched win for the last 6 years. Those guys. That's the problem.

Correct, resetting the luxury tax is key for this year and with all the money coming off the payroll, it really puts the Cubs in a great position going forward, as most of the big spenders are currently maxed out and likely with either trying to avoid the luxury tax, trying to reset it or will not have a ton a room to work if they continue to stay over (Dodgers). Maybe that is why there is no sense of urgency to extend anybody and they can allow the market dictate the price in the offseason knowing they have more leverage than what people think.

Padres with a perfect example of how to sell high and be opportunistic on a team in need, something this organization hasn't done since Oakland in 2014. I was never high on Davies but was optimistic that he was trending the right way after looking good this spring, nope. Had he shown something early I think he would have been a prime deadline flip arm, but nobody's taking at any rate right now. I really do think that in a rotation consisting of so many similar soft tossers like Hendricks and Mills, or lacking any high end velocity in general (Jake's been great but he's not that guy anymore) hurts his cause. In SD he was mixed in with some power arms and that worked to his advantage IMO by keeping opponents off balance, even against a formidable lineup like the Dodgers.
BTW, slightly off topic, but look at his Spring Training numbers. Obviously ST means nothing and is a small sample size and the opposition perhaps not MLB level, but still. Between that and how so many players are performing the opposite of how they did in Mesa that perhaps the Cactus League was the 2021 ST equivalent of what everybody said of the 2020 Central.

The Darvish deal was a salary dump. The Cubs were just hoping to get lucky in getting back anything useful. So far, no luck. I'm afraid that if the win pace doesn't pick up, we'll see 3 or 4 more position players gone before the trade deadline. The Cubs are are now in a similar position as the Red Sox were when Theo left. The team still has talent, but it's in a downward slide.

They should have started 2 years ago

This might seem a little far-fetched but after this season the Cubs will have a lot of salary-cap space to re-sign players like Baez, Bryant and Rizzo. Think of it like the Cubs and Yankees trade of Chapman. The Yankees acquired a lot of assets for Chapman and then re-signed him the following off-season. The Cubs, financially, will be in the same position to do the same if they so choose.

Now I'll have nightmares of Hoyer's end of season press conference: "We've known for years that we needed to make changes to the makeup of this team, so this offseason we're doing just that. Let me introduce you to our NEW starting first baseman, Anthony Rizzo. Our NEW starting third baseman, Kris Bryant. Our NEW starting shortstop, Javier Baez. And our NEW starting left fielder, Kyle Schwarber. As you can see, we've made a ton of changes with these free agent signings and so we expect our offense to look a lot different this upcoming season. Together with our core of Jason Heyward in right field, Ian Happ in center field, and Willson Contreras catching - we expect great things for years to come."

You're not having nightmares watching the Cubs starting pitchers? LOL? If this makes you feel better, Castellanos can opt-out after the season. Picture him in LF instead of Schwarber.

This isn't a slam bang gimme of trading and then re-signing the traded players. what if they like their new teams better? I'm not against trading any one, and takes our chances however

The pitching is horrible too, don't get me wrong.
I'm just saying the front office is so in love with a lot of these bats - that I can envision a scenario where they trade the would-be free agents in season, and then welcome them all back as free agents while using the opportunity to label them as "TOTALLY NEW" players. And then we'll repeat the same song and dance for the next decade.
Someone posted in one of the threads a few days ago - talking about Jake Marisnick and how he's basically Almora with better hitting tools, more power, more patience and more speed. So he's basically what everyone wanted Almora to be.
(Almora's kind of a bad example here, because there never was a ton of Almora bandwagon fans. And to give the impression that Marisnick is something like the greatest thing since sliced bread, is probably off too)
But the point is, the front office and some fans have become so enamored with a lot of these offensive pieces - they can't even consider that there are better options out there.
I get it... homegrown talent is nice, and I'm all for it. But when you start putting homegrown talent on a pedestal despite the lack of performance - you're not really doing yourself any favors.
I'm kind of ready to move on from this group. The offense has been stagnant for years - it's time to try something new. And yea, I'd be all for signing Castellanos (depending on the contract) as something new.

As much as I like Rizzo, having Freddie Freeman playing 1st base, for the Cubs, wouldn't be too bad. There are a lot of "IFs" involved in the process. What kind of return would Hoyer get if he does trade away Baez, Bryant and Rizzo and will Ricketts allow Hoyer to spend money on free agents? If so, how much?
