100 mph winds plus in Iowa. Not so bad here. The nearest weather station is DeKalb, and they reported wind gusts up to 44 mph.

It suddenly got a lot darker and ominous here in Springfield. Plus winds have picked up big time.

That is an Eastern Bluebird but we have Barn swallows, Tree Swallows & Purple Martins (all related) & they are very cool birds. They eat a TON of mosquito's.. Then perhaps my guests were eastern bluebirds. How can we tell the difference between them and barn swallows? If they built on your porch you were correct that they were barn swallows because that’s exactly what they do. They have a slightly dull orange belly & aren’t that afraid of you. Bluebirds are much more rare & generally nest in open areas (bird house) like mine do. We have over 6 acres with 90% grass so we have a few bird houses & a small stream on the property helps too. Lotta wildlife out here in the sticks but we love it.

I laughed so hard I choked. Re: Eastern bluebirds -- for years we had so many bluebirds, you couldn't count 'em all. Just in the last year, we've had a massive decrease in all kinds of avian species (and the corresponding increase in mosquitoes). Still trying to trace the cause -- best guess is someone messed up using insecticides here. Right behind our back yard is a state trail, and both the county and state spray around here pretty often. Also, in previous years when I turned on the porch light at night, it'd get swarmed by hundreds of insects. None to speak of now, but those damn mosquitoes. Messing up my Perseid watching tonite.

That is horrible.. No dragonfly’s around your house either? Not many the last two years. Used to have them perching on top of branches and fence posts all over the place -- skimmers, bluets, amberwings, darners . . .. No more lightning bugs either. Butterfly population affected, too. On the plus side, I lost a lot fewer peaches this year to insect depredations. That's why I think there was some huge mistake in spraying somewhere near. When you lose insects, you lose birds (sadly) and tree frogs (not so sadly).
