Based on what I am hearing and reading the Cubs will start the season with 12 position players and 13 pitchers. They may add a position player and subtract a pitcher around May 1st.
Locks: 9
OF: Schwarber, Fowler, Heyward IF: Bryant, Russell, Zobrist, Rizzo C: Montero and Ross
3 out of the 5 will make the roster
Soler Has had a horrible spring bad fielding mental errors etc. Baez Fighting a thumb injury. Hasn't played in over a week LaStella Started injured but has looked good lately. Maddon likes his pinch hitting skills.
Szczur Started injured but in the starting lineup today. No options left Kawasaki - Has had a great spring. Would have to be added to the roster
My guess:
Soler to Iowa Baez 15 day D/L Rehab in Iowa Lastella, Szczur, Kawasaki make the roster.

Good thread Joe. Your prediction may not be far off. Looks like they are leaning to keep Ramirez. Soler to AAA wouldn't shock me.

Soler may benefit from a trip back to Iowa, as in a wake up call. He hasn't exactly responded well to the challenge created when Fowler returned. I doubt it happens. And Szcur isn't worth fighting to keep.
Baez could also benefit from some more time spent in Iowa to work on that new approach at the plate. I never wavered from my thinking that he has an attainable ceiling but, he's showing all the signs of being a late bloomer, not unlike Toronto's Batista or Sammy Sosa. And with that swing of his, he needs at bats to stay on top of his game. Again, listening to Maddon, I doubt it happens. But, Maddon wanted him up last year out of ST.

No question about that. But, if the FO strongly feels some time in Iowa will help allow Baez' offense to take that next step forward, they may ponder weighing that future consideration Vs the immediate roster benefits, the dynamics of which were changed the moment Fowler signed on.
Soler WILL mash in Iowa. Finding something to light a fire under his butt is what's needed. Does a demotion serve that purpose? I'll only say that for a guy that clearly needs work on his fundamentals on defense, his sense of urgency is less than overwhelming.

I'd like to see Javy and Jorge get regular AB's until they are ready to go. Iowa makes sense for start of the year.

Keep in mind he is a slow starter by his own admission who prefers the warmer weather. If that is going to be the case again, I'd rather he start slow atniowa and work on the defense. He may be that guy with all the talent that never gets realized. Hope not. Still very very young and has plenty of time.

Soler to Iowa and traded for pitching if his numbers are there. And Sczur carrying other players bags. With his contract, if the numbers (even in AAA) look good, Soler should get a lot back in trade.

I think Soler makes the team. I also think Baez and LaStella make the team.

I think it would be crazy for Soler not to make the team, although the cool weather in April does make sense. I actually wouldn't be too surprised to see Baez start the season in Iowa.

I'm going with Lastella/Kawasaki/Baez. I think Soler going to AAA makes a lot of sense. I still think Baez and/or Soler get moved at some point for pitching so they both need to be performing well somewhere to have good trade value. Soler struggling in the cold at the MLB level with sporadic playing time probably isn't the best situation for him. Let him rake for awhile at AAA and then look at options from there. I don't think the sporadic playing time is a problem for Baez since his defense and new position versatility will keep him on the field enough to perform at the MLB level so no real need for AAA.

Based on what I am hearing and reading the Cubs will start the season with 12 position players and 13 pitchers. They may add a position player and subtract a pitcher around May 1st. They have hinted that they may flip flop that for the first 2 games at the Angels because of the DH. 12 pitchers and 13 positions players for two games only.

I think we make too much of the cold weather. He was great in the post season when it was cold. He also hit .247 in April, while not great, was his first April in MLB.
