I was just thinking about the Cubs roster and how I dont really ever remember a team that has so many guys who can and have played so many different positions.
Bryant 3b, LF, CF, 1B and on shifts SS and 2B
Baez could play any position if he had to, even catch
Schwarber LF , RF ,and C
Contreras C , 3B , 1B, RF, LF
Caratini C , 3B, 1B, LF
Bote 3B , 2B , LF , SS
Happ 2B , 3B , 1B , LF , CF, RF
Hoerner , SS, 2B, CF
Kipnis 2B , 3B, LF

They just have so many others that can.

I believe that most players have the ability to play multiple positions, Maddon was unique in actually playing them in multiple positions. If you really think about it, any CF can play any outfield position. The majority of corner outfielders can play left or right field. The majority of third basemen can play either corner outfield position. Any short stop can play third or second and second basemen can play around the infield as well as long as they have the arm for it. I think the only true uniqueness is that Contreras can play outfield. Most catchers could suit up to play first base, that isn't all that special in all reality. Some of what you said is players can do it for a very small amount of time, like Caratini and Contreras at third, in special circumstances sure but they are not going to play 9 innings there. Also, being able to play multiple positions is one thing, being able to play them well is a whole other ball game. Sure Schwarber could play LF but it wouldn't be well. Hoerner can man SS in a pinch and be okay at it. Bryant can actually play the outfield well. Contreras can play the outfield average. Baez would be a gold glove caliber player anywhere you put him.

Well "can play" , sure , most major leaguers "can play" pretty much anywhere if you put them there. But most of these guys actually play the other positions decently. Of course Joe had a lot to do with guys playing all over the place. Ross has said for the most part he wont do that but I think he aimed that comment at KB because the other guys are going to have to move around to get playing time.

Bote is a better defensive 3rd baseman than Bryant, so I hope we see Bryant in the DH spot for at least some of the games.
