I think the Cubs will carry Ian Miller over Phegley. I don't see the need to carry three catchers and with the DH rule, I see a base stealer more valuable than a bat off the bench. I'm not overly worried about one of Contreras or Caratini in the DH position and the other gets hurt, the risk seems very low and I think we could easily get by pinch hitting for the pitcher in that situation for a few at bats, then making a roster change if need be accordingly.

yeah I can see Ian Miller on team. he was impressive in spring training. Miller is player want to use late game situations or extra inning rule with runner on 2nd.

The Cubs are loaded with first base options if Caratini or Contreras need to catch and Rizzo is out.

Did Descalso get hurt last night? I saw the box score said he had an AB but was then subbed for defensively. Just kind of curious as to whether he had a real injury or if they're just hiding him from being cut for some reason. 45 days for an ankle sprain is pretty significant as well. Not that Garcia really has a place, but he's more valuable than DD at the moment.
Also curious that Zagunis has now decided to opt out. I don't think there was any doubt he wouldn't make the team.

I wasnt paying much attention to his at bat. but Ross and the trainer came out to check on him. Kind of seemed like a WWE scripted thing to me and Im only half joking.
Ross ...hey DD make it look like you hurt your ankle again and we can keep you around on the IL for the season if you want to stay around instead of waiving you.
Im glad he wont be around to take away at bats from others , but really if the front office likes the guy so much as a person make him part of the coaching staff.

Haha! it is a total BS injury for sure, apparently he really is a big deal in the clubhouse, and they found a way to keep him in the clubhouse while not hurting the team on the field. Seems like a win-win. I am assuming he will likely retire after the season and join the coaching staff, kind would would be shocked if he does not.

I could see it during a regular season with no DH but with the DH and the extra innings rule it made more sense to keep Miller. We don't need pinch hitters so Phegley's job basically is to sit the bench in the off chance that Contreras or Caratini is DHing and the other gets hurt? Miller would have given you the ability to swipe bags, bunt and at least play as a defensive replacement. Just seems like we went with a blunt butter knife as opposed to a cheap multi tool.

I would have rather seen Miller over Phegley too. But it is no real surprise because even back in spring when rosters were going to be 26 Ross talked about maybe going with 3 catchers.

My bold prediction this year is that Contreras sees more time at DH this year than any Cub, so especially if that's the case I'm all for it. Not sure the rule on switching a guy from DH to Catcher. I remember in an old video game if I did that then the pitcher had to hit..

I'm not a fan of the 3 catchers either, especially in years past, but with the short and condensed schedule I get it, especially now that the DH is in play for the NL. You have to assume Willy will be in the lineup whenever possible either at catcher or DH, which will probably make Caratini catch more than normal. Going from no baseball to a full schedule in the dead of summer could really wear them out quick, so I could see a 3rd catcher being helpful, especially one that's shown something with the bat so far. And as dontcare mentioned if Contreras is the DH and the catcher gets hurt they can't just swap Contreras in without losing the DH slot, just the rules of the DH.
