Well there is still the same trophy. Pandemic doesnt alter the trophy . I can understand not trading a top prospect for a guy you will have for a shorter period of time in 2020. But if that guy comes with two more years of control I dont see it changing anything from the norm.
If the Cubs are playing like shit and deem themselves out of it and want to get under the luxury tax I dont believe for a minute a pandemic is going to stop them from dealing guys to make it happen.

Teams might not trade a top prospect during this season for a rental . But why in the world would they not for a guy that also comes with two more years of control? That doesnt make sense that they would put future years of possibly getting a player they want in the scrap heap because of a shortened season this season. A team trading for Willy would not be trading for him just to win in 2020. Like I said, Theo and other teams have already gone on record saying they won't be trading any star players or prospects. Why would the Cubs trade Willy on a limited 60 player basis per team? I'd want access to a teams entire organization. Any team trading an elite player will be at a complete disadvantage in their return. Theo is smarter than that.

It won't be Willy.... It will be guys like Kimbrel, Quintana, Chatwood, etc.

I doubt Willy is dealt during the season if what you say is true about GM's making statements, I dont doubt you, I somehow missed that.
But I think he is more than likely gone this winter, especially if Caratini shows what weve seen from him so far can play in a bigger role.
I wish they could keep Willy . I just see them looking at the depth they have and costs are going to have to be sacrificed at a position or two to be able to extend some others and catching is a spot it looks obvious to do it in because of the depth.

I think the Cubs can get more for Willy in the off season or at the deadline next season, especially if he has the monster year I think he will have. He makes 4.5 million this year and that figure likely gets closer to 10 million in 2021.

Im trying to not get excited over his summer camp power show because its off his own pitchers he knows. But the way he hit last year. a short season and being able to DH and stay in the line up through one of his hot streaks Im on board with you about him having a monster year. And I think they sell high off that and his chances of being a Cub in 2021 are pretty slim.

Willy was a beast through the Cubs first 60 games last year and a legit MVP candidate: .297/.405/.571/.976 with 13 HR, 34 RBI Here's where Willy was through 51 games last year: .320/.425/.613/1.039 with 12 HR and 32 RBI These are legit MVP numbers, but Bellinger was on such a run, he was sick. Belly through the Dodgers first 60 games: .376/.462/.733/1.195 with 20 HR and 52 RBI. Cubs through first 60 games 2019: Bryant - .270/.385/.535/.920 with 13 HR and 36 RBI (another great start to the year for KB) Baez - .304/346/.578/.925 with 15 HR and 39 RBI (Baez was having an MVP season until he got hurt - foot) Rizzo - .283/.393/.566/.959 with 16 HR and 44 RBI (Rizz was play his best ball of the year through 60 games) These numbers right here is why I think the Cubs can kick some ass in 2020 and even win 40 games. Pitching will be key.

I'm curious to know the rules for trades... we know trades can only include guys on the 60 man but does that mean teams cannot make the infamous PTNL trades? If teams are allowed to include players to be named later it makes trades at least a little more likely but I would say even still the odds are insanely low. Most teams have their top prospects included in their 60 man player pool, I cannot see many teams willing to give up 3-4 prospects out of their pool to complete a trade for a guy like Contreras. Seems unlikely to me.

He can be the best catcher in baseball in 2020 and though he may have framing "issues", he's still good behind the dish and is very good at throwing runners out and picking them off.

I have no issues with Willy's game.
And like Ive said, I wish they could keep him.
And now I doubt an in season trade happens, just not the best time unless a team really is the aggressor going after him.
But I doubt he is a Cub come 2021.
Pitchers on the staff and the front office seem to like Caratini more and Amaya is on the horizon and they have 2 or 3 others after him and Willy is going to get expensive and his trade value should be peaking. But all that being said, Im would be happy if they did find a way to extend Willy. I just see him being more valuable to the future as a trade chip.
