IMO: 1) There's no way, the Cubs just started to consider Counsell, 5 days ago. That thought had to be already tossed about, as the Front Office was going out of their way to publicly praise Ross. 2) What a way to keep a secret. They totally pulled a fast one on NY & MLB. Of course, they had to. Otherwise, it would have been tampering. But they pulled it off. Unreal. 3) The Cubs needed 2 MAJOR differences in the dugout. First, the Cubs needed better Starting & Bullpen Management. Second, the Cubs needed a guy who was better suited at developing youth. Especially, Pitchers. And what a coincidence. That's exactly what is lined up, in the immediate future. www.mlb.com/cubs/news/cubs-voice-support-for-david-ross-after-season-finale

I remember when the FO was frothing over Ross after the season it seemed too positive. And here we are.

Teams needed permission from the current team prior to 11/1.

I always liked Counsell as a manager, but never expected him to join the Cubs. Now that he has, I welcome him with open arms.
Ross's tenure with the Cubs should be appreciated by fans as both as player and manager. But I became concerned with some of his recent game day decisions.
Spending big bucks for a new manager may imply much activity regarding player acquisitions and promotions before spring training. That may have been part of the deal that convinced Counsell to manage the Cubs.

With how tense things are on the Southside right now if the Cubs so much as sniff the world series in the next couple years, Sox fans are going to mass riot. All 8 of them.

I wish there was like a WAR stat for managers. I wonder how many games the cubs got better today without a play transaction. 5 plus games??

I lost count how many questionable decisions lead to an L. Granted that can happen to any manager, even Craig when they roll the dice. But some of them it was like …

Let's not forget Rossy's team last year exceeded predictions for the year. I don't think he's a bad manager in any respect. But if Counsell does better it'll be a minimal difference (which could make a huge difference!)

I was less than thrilled with what seemed like a lack of allowing youngsters to receive playing time & that might be an old school mentality, or maybe he just didn't like what he saw in practice or pregame stuff too. Who knows & I feel terrible for Rossy but I am very excited for what's to come. Go Cubs!!

It's not like he's a bad manager, he's just not Council who is one of the best. I guarantee that the Cardinals hate this hire & are worried about Council now with the Cubs, a team willing to spend 70 to 100 million more each year to win than what he was used to.. That makes me smile just knowing it happened.
